Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Donation protected
My name is Cayley. I am 20 years old with a younger sister, 18, and brother, 15.

October is Australia’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual campaign that provides an opportunity for us to focus on breast cancer and its impact on those affected by the disease.

A  huge chunk of our lives have been spent watching  our mum go in and out of hospital, attend regular check ups and fear waking up not knowing if that day would be her last. After continously proving her doctors wrong and always coming out on top of her cancer, mum sadly lost her fight on the 26th of January this year.

She was our best friend. She was strong, caring and determined to beat the disease a second time. She would assure us every day that we'd be stuck with her for a very long time and laugh at the thought of giving up. We wanted to believe her - yet we were faced seeing our once joyful, energetic, dancing and singing around the house Mum slowly become sick, tired and weak.

Mum had metastatic breast cancer -  which means the cancer cells spread beyond the breast and can become tumours in vital organs, such as the lungs, bones, liver and brain. Up to one-third of women and men with breast cancer will go on to develop metastatic breast cancer.

The National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) is the only national body that funds life-changing breast cancer research with money raised entirely by the Australian public. This year, 50% of donated funds go specifically towards metastatic breast cancer research.

The only way to prevent deaths and improve how breast cancer is diagnosed is through research. NBCF is working towards a goal of zero deaths from breast cancer by 2030.

Your support is needed for:
Detection - New tools and tests with the ability to detect returning cancer earlier on
Immunotherapy - Aims to switch on the immune system's ability to see and kill cancer cells in the body
Targeted Treatments - Specific treatments for metastic stage cancer are a research priority and urgently needed

This is an organisation I am whole heartedly behind, as it is time to come together and fight cancer before it takes more lives of those we love. I would love to be able to reach my goal before Breast Cancer Awareness month ends. Any donation is very much appreciated and will all go to NBCF. Alternatively, remind your friends to get check ups or wear a pink item of clothing for the cause.
