Imagine This: High school-aged Writing Leaders travel to an elementary school once a week to lead workshops with 4th and 5th graders that focus on reading and writing as joyful, life-long activities. Imagine what those relationships do for both sets of students; imagine how it helps them to become more engaged, more literate, more capable citizens. It is the best kind of magic, and it is the kind of positive, hands-on education that Baton Rouge youth deserve.

The students in McKinley High School's Writing Lab & Internship Classes are ready to make magic, but we need a ride
to get there! These high school students spent the fall preparing to teach creative writing workshops and be literacy buddies to 4th and 5th grade classes at the former Polk Elementary (now part of BR FLAIM Intermediary School). However, after just two visits, our school's bus broke down.

It won't be hard to get back to our internship as soon as next week, but we need your help. We have ten visits scheduled this spring, and getting another bus and driver will cost us $50 per trip. We need $500 to finish our internships. If 20 people donate $25, we'll be on the road.

Our class is part of Humanities Amped at McKinley High School, where we are working together to transform education through civic engagement. This is our first year offering the Writing Lab Internship, which is modeled after work being done at Andover Bread Loaf, and with the help of our friends at Forward Arts  and LSU English .

Please help us make this internship everything it can and should be for our students. With your help, we can show what is possible when we invest in a generative, joyful education for all.
