White Orchid Vibrational Art Center

In the fall of 2014 I started graduate school.  With my daughter about to graduate from high school and leave the nest, I felt that it was time to begin something new.  So, I decided to become an art teacher.

What I've learned from being in an art education program is that I really love being in the classroom and helping young people to express their innate creativity.  Because, regardless of what many people think we really are creative beings.  What I've also learned is that how we teach art in public schools is inadequate.  Most art classes are between 30 and 40 minutes long, once a week.  In some instances students get to participate in art classes twice a week.  Still, that's just not enough time.

Studies have shown that students who get a quality arts education are four times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement, have lower rates of behavioral problems, and are more likely to graduate high school.

I propose an arts center that combines art classes with yoga and meditation.  Yoga helps kids to develop body awareness, learn how to use their bodies in a healthy way, manage stress through breathing, awareness, meditation and healthy movement and it builds concentration.

The "White Orchid Vibrational Art Center" (WOVAC) will provide art classes along with yoga and meditation to children who are home schooled, as well as after school and summer arts programs for inner city youth.

Through the Small Business Administration, I've acquired a mentor to assist me through the process of developing a non-profit organization.  I'm also taking advantage of the classes and workshops they offer, so that I have developed a clear understanding of what is required of me in managing an arts center.

The $50,000 I am requesting will be used to cover start up costs; non-profit registration, operating expenses -renting space - staffing - supplies, website, promotion, etc.

I would like to have the center open and running by September 1, 2016.  That probably sounds a bit aggressive but really, there's no time to waste.

Our kids need to experience a better way of being in the world.  I believe that through this organization we will provide them with that opportunity.  The chance to gain a better understanding of themselves as physical, creative and expressive beings.  Please support me in providing our children with an integrative arts/yoga/meditation program that will help them to access the deeper parts of themselves.

Your sponsorship will afford you an inside look at our progress via a monthly newsletter.  Thank you for your contribution, and for partnering with me in support of children.
