2017 – Hawaiʻi Island will mark the 22nd year of World Peace and Prayer Day.
World Peace And Prayer Day/Honoring Sacred Sites Day is an international and intergenerational celebration for people of all faiths, nations, races, ages and genders who share concern for the welfare of humanity and the Earth to share in One Prayer. In addition to a main gathering at a sacred site chosen each year, thousands around the world join at their own sacred sites as well as in their churches, mosques, temples, synagogues and other places of prayer.
The call to protect our connection to the land and sacred sites is echoing in a growing chorus worldwide as we face many environmental crises. Indigenous voices are leading the way. In 2016 an unprecedented event saw the coming together of tribes and people from around the world at Standing Rock to protect water threatened by the proposed DAPL. Similarly, since 2014 people from all around the planet have rallied in support of the protectors of the sacred mountain Mauna Kea on Hawaiʻi Island where a Thirty Meter Telescope is proposed to be built.
Because sacred sites on Hawaiʻi Island include Mauna Kea, the tallest mountain in the world measured from seafloor to summit, and Kilauea, an active volcano connected to the core of the Earth, the Island will be a powerful site for prayers to be offered during WPPD 2017.
During World Peace and Prayer Day the honoring ceremonies, invocations and prayers at the main chosen site are observed in collaboration with local indigenous representatives. Wisdom keepers and activists share spiritual insight and discuss important environmental concerns and solutions on both a local and global level.
We are raising funds to uphold our duty to the World Peace and Prayer Day vision--to bring together our honored Elders, Teachers and Wisdom-Keepers with the next generation of leaders. The funding is specifically for those who cannot otherwise afford to travel, those who serve indigenous communities as their life work. We appreciate any and all donations, no matter what the amount. It is about working together to give to the greater vision.
