What if making the world a fairer, more sustainable place were a surprisingly simple thing to achieve? What if we could put 'people and the planet' at the heart of decision-making, just by increasing the voice of women at the global leadership table?
Women are the nurturers, the negotiators, the conflict-resolvers. We are much more likely to put the good of the family or community over our own ego, and we are the primary nesters. Our planet is everyone's 'nest,' along with 10 million+ other species. So enabling women to more powerfully shape our planet's future is crucial to helping avert the climate and social disasters of the next century. And we can and will step up to the plate to do this.
I'm Phoebe Barnard, and I'm a woman in global change science in Africa. I'm part of an incredible, Antarctic leadership expedition for 78 women, "Homeward Bound." Our voyage to South Georgia and Antarctica is the frame for sustainability leadership coaching and mentorship to enable us to increase our positive impact on our society and planet. Each of us needs to raise about $18 000, which is just over one third of the total costs per person.
Our fundraising will pay for travel to Ushuaia, Argentina, medical assessments, airport taxes, and especially state-of-the-art leadership coaching and empowerment as we track Sir Ernest Shackleton and other great leaders and voyagers. I've paid $1 500 from my own savings, and will organize separate loan of clothing for harsh climates. I must raise $4 500 by 28 Feb 2016 and the final $12 000 by 30 June 2016. This is a scary thing, with my life savings having been wiped out in the past few years by tumultuous family changes and cancer ops. But I'm sure I can do it, with your help. If we can raise more than this, I can also directly help my young colleague Prideel Majiedt from South Africa, whose circumstances are even tighter than mine, get on the expedition too.
