Women Legal Aid in Tanzania

Donation protected
OUR GOAL is to greatly increase the number of women receiving our legal aid, by moving from our current tiny, 11,2 m2 fourth-floor office to a new, much larger office. Our current location, due to its small size and its lack of accessibility, only allows us to receive a small percentage of the women we could otherwise help. In order to remedy this, our first step is the purchase of a new plot of land.

Arusha Women Legal Aid and Human Rights Organization (AWLAHURIO)
is a non-profit, non-governmental organization (NGO) founded in 1998. More information can be found on the AWLAHURIO Website .

AWLAHURIO is a legal clinic and a host to human rights events, workshops and trainings. We proudly operate in the entirety of the Arusha region of Tanzania. All members and interns are volunteers. Therefore, all funds received to AWLAHURIO are spent directly on programs to benefit the people of Tanzania.

Our two most important contributions are the legal aid we provide to common people, as well as the outreach for creation of awareness. People that otherwise would have no access to any form of legal assistance, making it impossible for them to stop the violation of their human rights.

1 - An increase from 500 to 2000 people a year

Per year we provide 500 people with legal aid. Although this is a fairly high number, it could be much higher. AWLAHURIO has access to a vast network of volunteers, capable to help up to 2000 people a year. A necessary increase, given the great number of people who remain deprived of legal aid. Most of these are women and children. They face problems varying from physical abuse, to loss of property.

Why aren't we helping 2000 people a year, instead of 500, you may ask? The thing that's holding us back is housing. Currently we are housed in a tiny office in downtown Arusha. This office measures only 11,8 m2, whilst often having to accommodate 5 to 6 volunteers, making it very difficult if not impossible to receive clients. This is mainly due to three reasons.

2 - Current barriers

First, there is the problem of privacy: when a client comes to our office, she will find herself in the company of all the volunteers working on that day. This means an infringement of that person's privacy. This while many of the cases or of a sensitive nature. This means that it's very important that the person receiving legal aid, feels safe to give all the information that's needed in order to help her.

Secondly, there is often just simply not enough room to receive a client. This is especially true, when there is a need for medation, in which case both parties have to be received at once.

Third, the current office is located on the fourth floor. A fair number of the people in need of legal aid, are either of older age or disabled. Because there is no lift, the office is simply not accessible to them.

3 - An office accessible to our clientele

The amount we aim to raise through this funding campaign was fixed according to the price of a plot of land that could house the new office, with enough space to give clients the required privacy, located on a safe area on the outskirts of Arusha, which costs 20.000 pounds.
