Hello Friends,

I am WolF J McFarlane, I am an artist and a graphic designer and I have been suffering from a disease called Keratoconus.

I’ve been unaware of this condition for quite some time, I just thought everyone saw how I saw. It was only after speaking to a friend of mine that I realized that there was something seriously wrong with my eyes. I immediately went to the eye doctor and I was diagnosed with Keratoconus in both of my eyes.

Keratoconus is a progressive eye disease that causes the normally round cornea to thin and bulge into a cone-like shape. The cone like shape deflects light as it enters the eye on its way to the retina, causing blurry vision, double vision, nearsightedness, astigmatism and light sensitivity (among other symptoms), all at the same time.

As you all are very much aware, I am a full-time freelance graphic designer, and my eyesight is essential to my ability to work. Unfortunately, as my disease progresses, my vision will rapidly deteriorate and although it will not cause total blindness without proper treatment Keratoconus can lead to significant vision impairment which will eventually result in me being declared legally blind.

I require surgery in order to stop the disease from progressing. My surgery is scheduled for March 20th, 2017. If I do not get this surgery then my disease will progress to a point where my only option is to get a cornea transplant or live with legal blindness for the rest of my life.

I’ve dedicated a huge part of my life to graphic design and helping my community with my skills as a creative director, and it would absolutely devastate me to no longer be able to financially support myself as well as just be a creative. Following the surgery, I will be unable to see much of anything and I will be mostly confined to my home because of swelling and risk of infection. I will not be able to work for that time.

For reasons unknown, OHIP does not cover the procedure to stop Keratoconus from progressing. Even though on the OHIP website it clearly states: "Specified ophthalmology services for patients of any age with specified medical conditions or diseases affecting the eyes are insured.” and the procedure is covered in other provinces.

Unfortunately, as OHIP is unwilling and seemingly incapable of providing me with an explanation as to why a disease that I was born with is not insured, I am left alone to figure out how I will handle such a large medical expense, my after surgery care, and basic day to day needs.

I am reaching out to my community to see if anyone is willing to donate to my medical expenses, as well as provide support for the time I will not be able to work. My family is trying to put together some money but we are struggling to pay for such a huge expense.

By the end of the campaign, the five people who have donated the highest amounts, I will provide with a print of the latest addition to my collection (shown below)

I am so thankful to everyone that can donate. If you can't donate, I would really appreciate it if you could share this campaign in any place you think it may be welcomed.
