Help Wilson Tela Fight Leukaemia

Donation protected
Hello dear Friends and Family of Wilson Tela.

As you may or may not have heard Wilson (or Willy as he is known to many of us) was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia in November 2016.

This news has been a huge shock to Wilson, his family and friends but he is absolutely determined to overcome this life threatening illness, and get back to the life he loves amongst his family and friends whilst working in the diving and tourism industries in Cairns.

Wilson has been receiving Chemotherapy treatment since his diagnosis and this will continue for the next few months. He is currently being looked after by Danni Tela who has turned her life upside down, and selflessly taken on a primary carer role for Wilson. Having completed the first month of treatment we have all realised that to effectively support Wilson and Danni in a sensitive manner, there is an overwhelming need for an organised and coordinated approach.

We are a group of friends[1] of Wilson whose lives have been interwoven with his for twenty-five years and we are keen to help Wilson and Danni in whatever ways possible and shoulder some of the burden that has recently descended on them, both financially and personally.

After full consultation with Wilson and Danni it was decided to firstly create this crowd-funding page and secondly consider ways to provide non-financial support and ease their personal burden.

Accordingly, the purpose of the crowd-funding page is to:

1. Provide a way to reach the many friends Wilson has made over many years so that they are aware of Wilson’s situation. These friends come from all walks of life and are stretched across many countries.
2. Provide a way for people to financially support Wilson in his fight. There will be many additional expenses in the next 12 months. We are calling on this community to get behind Wilson, make a donation and let him get down to the business of his treatment without having to worry about money. Please consider giving and we greatly appreciate your generosity.
3. Identify other ways friends can provide support.

Information regarding your donations:

- Money received from donations will be used 100% in support of Wilson’s treatment and family.
- Donations will be sent through this crowd-funding page to a bank account controlled by Wilson's good friends Jane and Steve Schober. Regular updates of monies received and spent will be provided to the management group to ensure transparency.
- All expenditure will be at the discretion of Wilson & Danni. Money will be sent from Jane and Steve to Danni/Wilson when required.
- Donations are not refundable and are not tax deductible.
- Giving money through this page is the best way to support Wilson in his fight.

To ease the personal burden on Wilson and Danni:

- Please be considerate when trying to make contact with Wilson or Danni. They are both currently very focused on dealing with Wilson’s treatment and would find it very difficult to answer your messages or phone calls.
- Danni has to continue to work and to be a mother to her two daughters. In particular Danni finds it difficult to repeatedly give updates on Wilson’s condition.
- Instead, please use the following Facebook page to see updates and leave messages of support:
https://www.facebook.com/Wilson-Telas-fight-against-Leukaemia-225700824545119/
- The Facebook page will be a primary source of information and contact for people who want to support Wilson. We understand everyone’s concern, and it is most welcomed, but we do need to respect Wilson and Danni’s privacy to allow him to successfully complete his treatment. Wilson can then check in on the page and respond to messages as it suits him.
- As you would expect, it is unreasonable to assume Danni will provide accommodation, meals and transport for friends visiting Cairns to see Wilson. Please ensure you make your own arrangements.
- Wilson’s treatment is rigorous and exhausting. His ability to respond to well-wishers can vary greatly from hour to hour. He feels he currently cannot cope with many visitors in hospital as he is very tired from the Chemo and mostly does not have the energy to converse. Keep in mind that such visits will be emotionally tiring for both the visitors and Wilson himself.
- We understand that your heart is undoubtedly in the right place but you could be causing him unnecessary stress.
- As Wilson progresses through his recovery the opportunities for better contact and interaction will improve. Please join with us in being patient and understanding during these early times.
- Are you able to provide support to the family in any other ways (e.g. home nursing, taxi services, food, quiet companionship during recovery times at home etc)?
- Do you have other ideas we have not thought of? If so then please contact Steve Schober via his email address: [email redacted].au

Wilson is a wonderful soul who has touched the lives of so many people. He would be the first person to help out a mate and would literally give you the shirt off his back, and has also been known to give away the shoes off his feet. Please show him the same kindness and make a donation today!
