Tom and Rebecca Friesen are an amazing couple who have adopted a little boy, William, with a condition called Fragile X Syndrome .
They are devoted to William and work tirelessly to meet his ongoing needs. It is not an easy role, but they do it with so much passion, love and commitment and at times without much sleep or respite. Tom and Rebecca stop at nothing to source and provide any opportunity to help their son grow and learn, enabling him to live life to the full as much as possible.
One of the many behavioural, emotional, developmental and physical features of the Fragile X Syndrome, is speech and communication difficulties. Tom and Rebecca long to be able to have a simple conversation with William and to know what he is thinking and feeling.
An opportunity has arisen for them to purchase a dedicated communication device that would help William in the following ways:
- he can type out sentences and it will say them out loud for him, removing the performance anxiety which he suffers from greatly
- it will help him express feelings, for which he usually cannot find the words in stressful situations
- he will be able to contribute in social situations and no longer feel isolated.
This device costs $6495.00 and includes training and support for Tom and Rebecca to learn how to help William use the device to its full capacity and for him to get the most benefit out of it.
Due to William's high level, ongoing needs Rebecca does not work and therefore it is a financial strain for their one income family to raise this large sum.
