William Wells

As you know, Robyn and Will are my best friends.   This entire family helped my boys and I at a time that we were struggling and I need your help to show them the love in return.

I have over 700 Facebook friends that I’m reaching out to help me support my friend.  A small donation of $5 or $10 would make a world of difference and let’s be honest- we pay that for coffee.

So here’s the scoop.
On Friday, October 19th, William Wells suffered a fall in the middle of the night walking to his bathroom from bed. His wife Robyn, heard the commotion and immediately thought something had gotten knocked over by the dogs. She rushed to the hall way to see what had happened and found, Wells (Will, Billy, William- he’ll be called Wells in the rest of this though, ) laying on the concrete floor on his back. He was unconscious. She attempted to wake him and then noticed the excessive amount of blood that he was laying and immediately called their son, Sedric down and called 911. He was taken by ambulance to St. Anthony’s OSF hospital in Alton where they had determined that it was much more than just a few staples for a cut on the head.

He was transferred to St. Louis University Hospital immediately and was taken through the ER to the ICU. This was a terrifying time of less answers than questions, more tests than results and overwhelming emotions as his family and friends struggled to watch the man they knew to be strong willed, funny, witty and vocal not be able to say a word. He was unable to stay awake and the pain was unbearable. This lasted 5 days in the ICU until a bed became available in the Brain Trauma Center.

It was then determined that Wells had 3 arteries in his frontal lobe that are affecting his short-term memory, impulse control, lack of empathy, sympathy and basically no filter on raw emotions. At this time he had not been out of bed in 6 days and had very little ability to connect or communicate with anyone.

He spent the next 4 days in the Brain Trauma Unit at SLU. Multiple tests and scans and more tests occurred during this time. We were told collectively that he would need 6-12 months intense therapy to start the process of recovery. On Sunday, October 28th they determined that despite his multiple contusions and collapsed arteries in the frontal lobe that there was not much more medically that could be done at the facility. He was sent home.

This is where the story begins… again. He is now unable to work and Robyn has been off for seceral weeks during this turn of events to manage and care for him along with his parents Glenn and Debra Cooper, his sister, Trena Wells and his kids; Trenton, Sedric and Jaedyn. His support system of friends and family is strong! However, there is so much to prepare going forward. He will need round the clock care for the next several months due to his agitation levels, lack of impulse control, weakness, dizziness, confusion and so many more factors that occur on the hourly basis that we are just learning.

His rehab alone will cost a fortune not to mention the co pays and deductibles for the hospital stays and constant change in medications. He will begin rehab on Wednesday, November 7th at St. Claire’s in Alton, IL as well as face many occupational challenges including psychology for management and understanding for him as well as his team.

Anything you do will help the family focus on his recovery verses how to pay the  bill that accompanies each treatment.

We have fundraisers planned and will update those dates and activities as soon as they are confirmed.

I would like to thank all of you who have liked our Facebook page, @walkingwithwells and those who have messaged all of us this past month.  Please continue to pray and lift him in spirit and laughter.

Wells is the most stubborn man I’ve ever met- there is no doubt he will fight to the win.

On behalf of the family, I thank you for your support for my friends.

Love hugs and puppy dog kisses to all!
Dalton.
