SkillsUSA National Competition

Donation protected
OVERVIEW:

Hello, our names are Madison Garrigues, Regan Hooker, and Alexandra Whittall. We are junior Digital Media Arts students at a Career and Technical Education High School campus located in Hornell, New York.

This April, our team of three competed in the Promotional Bulletin Board competition at the New York State SkillsUSA competition in Syracuse, NY.   We now have been given the amazing opportunity to compete in the 2017 SkillsUSA National Leadership Conference and Competition in Louisville, Kentucky.  In Louisville, our entry will represent New York in a competition with entries from all other states.

OUR PROJECT’S PURPOSE:

The purpose of our project is to create an attention-grabbing recruitment tool to communicate how SkillsUSA membership can help our students by giving them ways to gain necessary industry skills.

Our bulletin board illustrates the theme “Preparing America’s Skilled Workforce” by showing viewers that the SkillsUSA organization helps to “bridge” the skills gap by providing opportunities for our students to grow in their skills.

The project will be used to inform and remind students of the importance of not only learning technical & trade skills in their CTE class, but also to work on learning professional skills that will be important to future careers.   These include skills such as

TECHNICAL SKILLS:  job safety, customer service, computer skills
WORKPLACE SKILLS: teamwork, communication, and problem solving
PERSONAL SKILLS: work ethic, responsibility and professionalism.

THE PROCESS:

We began by researching the skills gap, which has been discussed by industry leaders and TV personality Mike Rowe.  In our research, we learned that there is a skills gap in which many Americans are not receiving the hands-on training that industry requires.
We then used the traditional creative design process to brainstorm and sketch our ideas for our board.
After deciding on use of the “bridge” theme, we created the board using Adobe Illustrator software.
During construction of the display, we collaborated with our campus Building Trades class to make the backboard and frame.
We created a notebook which documents the development and construction of the bulletin board.

WHAT’S AHEAD:

Now that we have made it this far, our next step is to be completely prepared for our trip.   At the National Competition, our bulletin board will be judged based on a variety of standards, and we will make an oral presentation to explain the process, purpose and educational value. We will also display and greet visitors to our booth and answer questions about our project.

In addition to learning about the skills required for success in the workplace, we have learned leadership and teamwork skills and we believe that this competition will help us grow even more.

We will be traveling from New York to Kentucky by plane, and staying in a hotel during the competition. We will also need to pay for our food and anything else we may need.   This trip is partially funded by our school, however our lodging and meals will need to be paid for by us.   We are doing in-class fundraising, selling snack sticks and dinners, to help fund our trip but as the competition is in late June, so we don't have much time.

Any amount will help bring us closer to our goal, so any donations would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!
