Nowhere to live, after the house was engulfed and burned in flames. After devastating losses due to the wildfires in CA they have no home to return to. Michael is out buying new clothes for the kids and being a Rabbi to his congregation all at the same time. Just as Tamar was set to bring more of her art and classes to the world with the right space and equipment, the fire stopped them in their tracks. These parents and children are some of the most giving souls I know. This rabbinic couple fights for the soul of humanity every day. Now it is our turn to give back. Please give generously to get them on their feet and to help them recover! Your donation will be doubled by the measures of goodness they add back to the world.

Although we WILL thank you all personally once things settle down a bit, we wanted to share THIS kind of thanks with you in the meantime:
Today David got ready for school after the weekend. His class met only three times since the fires. He started putting some of the new legos into a bag - legos that some of you have sent and which we have bought with your generosity. He said he was giving these to his classmate Noah, one of the other 8 kids total in his 1st grade class that lost their homes. On Friday apparently Noah was telling how his legos burned and he still does not have any new ones. So David on his own decided to give some of his new legos to Noah.
The generosity we have received has been profound and life-changing for all of us. The care and support and love has altered our souls, and I think this example of "mitzvah goreret mitzvah" - one good deed catalyzes another good deed - shows how all this kindness now comprises our souls and will ripple out into the world through all of us and all of you...Thank you!

THANK YOU all so much for your incredibly generous concern, help, and care. We will post more updates soon, and when we get things more settled will write personal thank-you notes that will better express what your help means to us at this time. We are pretty much overwhelmingly speechless with gratitude right now, and incapable of responding coherently to the awe of the love so many of you have shown us.

Meanwhile, please know that all your help has given Tamar and I the peace of mind that echoes into the souls of our kids as we 'keep clam and breathe' and guide them through this. We are staying in the guest house of strangers-who've-become-friends in the last few days, and we will figure out a more permanent housing solution in the coming couple of weeks.

Your help also echoes into our community which was/is in crisis with almost everyone evacuated (and many still so) and with 14 families losing their homes (at last count): You have allowed me to focus on being the rabbi for our community at this time of need, to be there for the two benai mitzvah services we've held since the fire - including for a bat mitzvah girl this Shabbat whose house was lost, and to have the wherewithal to reach out to everyone and be as supportive as I can, to function in immediate response mode and to plan our ongoing response to the needs of our community - needs which will only continue to grow in the coming weeks and months.

Please: We have put on the lifejackets you have given us. You are our life savers. From here on, we will be ok swimming on our own... If you can help and if our story moves you to help, use your ability to help others who have yet to receive the support they need: many fire victims are not as fortunate as us to have such a supportive and capable worldwide network of helpers. We also think of Syrian refugees, or Rohinga, or so many others whose world is also on fire whether literally or figuratively and how frightening it must be not to have all of you there to help us when help is needed.

Our Malibu Jewish Center and Synagogue will also need additional help to provide all the social services, spiritual, emotional, and material support that our community in Malibu will need as well as significant cleaning, repair, and security costs. I am proud to announce that we will house a 3 day/week program for young adults with disabilities that was displaced when camp JCA Shalom burned down last week, and we will adopt other programs that need a home as well since, thank God, our home at MJCS was spared.

There is much mitzvah work more urgent than our family's immediate needs, which your generosity can support.

I am hoping to find enough words, and words worthy enough, to capture what this Thanksgiving will mean for us this year thanks to all of you.

Thank you.
To be continued...
Michael and Tamar

So incredibly moved by the generosity of all those who contributed. Thank you for being part of this campaign of giving to the ones we love, at a time of need. As you can see the gifts keep coming in beyond the goal, because (it is no surprise) Michael and Tamar inspire us to be more....with love, Rabbi Scott Bolton
