My name is Rachel and I am a young Canadian Ultramarathon runner. Two and a half years ago, I felt like there was a lack of pace in where my life was going. The anxiety of everyday life had overwhelmed me and I found myself dead in my tracks. I had two choices; find something above and beyond that would push me forward or succumb to slow and continuous rut. Having always been athletic, I needed something to break me out of the physical constraints that these anxieties had bound me in. The answer was simple. Running. The freedom that running had given me was the ability to see forward. I could run and run and run and still continue to break personal thresholds that I once thought were impossible. In September 2016, I finished my first marathon with tears in my eyes as I crossed the finish line. Because of my new found ability to push beyond my boundaries and within seven months, I fearlessly (for the most part) registered for La Mision race in Patagonia and managed to conquer 100 miles.

I will be running 12 Ultra Trail World Tour races over the course of 12 months over 12 countries. Now, keep in mind; these are not just your average run of the mill races, they have been labeled as ULTRA races. What is an ultra? An ultra marathon is categorized as any distance beyond the 42.2 km mark. These races range in distance between 100km to 500km  with limiting time constraints, variations in terrain and landscape whether that be racing up Mt.Fiji or running through the Sahara deserts. And if that’s not enough; we are expected to carry our own food and water supply along with whatever essentials you can manage to fit on your back all the way to the finish line.

I guess the most pressing question is why embark on this journey in the first place?

The answer lies simply in that I want to inspire our youth to get out there and pursue a goal, no matter how big it seems. Until its done. I believe that mental health is a huge topic for discussion and I want to bring forward this topic to the world. Running to advocate for mental health. I have close family who suffers from extreme mental health and friends who battle this daily. This topic touches home for me on so many different facets.

When I started to formulate this journey, many people would look at me with confusion. Not really understanding why I want to "run the world". I believe in this lifetime, opportunity and chances come infrequently. It is up to us to chose to follow that opportunity or turn our heads blindly. I personally never wanted to be the one looking up at the mountains from below, I wanted to be the one who summited them. When you manifest your dreams, turning "one day" into "right now" is where the magic is unraveled. Passion, dedication and perseverance has brought me to this point.

I am running towards building mental health for our youth. I know I can go the distance for them.  Right foot, left foot. Repeat.

Here is a glimpse at the year long journey ahead.
