Whirl of a Girl is a rhyming story about an adventurous girl just going about her day. Join Wren as she explores outside, gets messy, and has a good time doing it!
When my daughter was born, seven years ago, I began reading about the way society places girls in pink boxes full of princesses. I wanted to write a story about a different kind of girl. There is absolutely nothing wrong with girls who like pink and princesses, but they should also know that it's okay to be tough and get dirty. I hope that parents and children (both male and female) will see themselves in Wren and feel inspired by her adventures.
After SIX YEARS in the making, Whirl of a Girl is finally ready to go to print. But I need your help!
I will be self-publishing, which involves upfront costs. Here's a breakdown of the fees involved:
$1000 - layout/cover/distribution
The publisher will take my story and Afton's incredible illustrations and turn them into a hardcover book that can be enjoyed by your family and mine. They will also make the book available to order through Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and many other storefronts worldwide.
$1500 - printing
This fee will cover the initial printing of the book to fulfill pre-orders made through this crowdfunding, in addition to having some on hand for local events and promotional giveaways.
$500 - shipping and incidentals
$500 - reviews
Libraries generally order books based on reviews in specific magazines. This will allow my book to be seen by librarians who may decide to share Wren's story with their patrons.

About the author:
Emily Merrell has enjoyed writing stories since she was a child, but took a long break from this creative outlet. After the birth of her first child, she was inspired to pick up writing again and is excited to release her first children’s book. She lives in Oregon with her husband, her own sass of a lass, and two joyful boys.
About the illustrator:
Afton Muir's first paid job was drawing custom pictures for her second grade classmates in exchange for soda. In addition to drawing, she dances, teaches yoga, and plays with her four awesome kids. When she's not riding her bike to the library, you can find her in her flower garden tying sticks together with string.
