Western New England Greenway Signs

Rugged Hills. Meandering country roads. Cascading waterfalls. The Western New England Greenway / Bikeway, a contiguous network of routes connecting New York City with Montreal, offers cyclists the thrilling opportunity to experience and enjoy numerous state parks, historic and cultural sites, and gorgeous scenery up close and personally. The trick, however, is locating these rural treasures.
That’s where the Upper Housatonic Valley National Heritage Area – and you – come in. Wayfinding. There are many miles of dedicated bike paths, but – for the most part – this is a low-volume, low speed ‘road route’ through CT, MA, and VT. And it needs signage in order to ensure relaxing and invigorating rides.
The U.S. Bicycle Route System (USBRS) wants to make cycling across the country as easy as following numbers, eventually creating the largest official cycling route network in the world. To date, over 13,000 miles of U.S. Bicycle Routes have been approved and when complete, the USBRS will encompass 50,000 miles of routes generating new opportunities for cross-country travel, regional touring, and commuting by bicycle.
We are partnering with Upper Housatonic Valley National Heritage Area to raise funds for signage along the Connecticut portion of the Western New England Greenway. The section became an official US Bike Route in 2016 and is designated USBR 7 and features access to multiple historic, cultural and natural resource sites. We’d like to see the rural route safely utilized by even more cyclists and your help can point the way.
