Following is our original post, from February 2016.

FEBRUARY 2016
Evelyn ("Evie") is a spunky, creative, precocious three-year-old who enjoys singing, books, and tea parties. She lives in Biddeford, Maine with her two-year-old sister, Eleanor, and their parents, Andrew and Elizabeth.

In February of 2016, Evie underwent an emergency—but routine—surgery for intussusception and removal of a Meckel's diverticulum. In the ensuing weeks, she has experienced multiple complications that have compounded her health issues, necessitated many more tests and procedures, and required her to remain hospitalized (largely in the ICU) indefinitely. For the team at Maine Medical Center, she has thus far proven an enigma.

In a bizarre, coincidental twist, Evie's health crisis took place during the same week that Andrew—who has battled Crohn's disease since childhood—underwent his own major abdominal surgery. This has added stress and difficulty to an already trying situation.

The family remains hopeful while awaiting answers regarding Evie's long-term prognosis. One thing, though, is clear: her road to recovery will be lengthy and very expensive. While Evie has a wonderful support network of grandparents, cousins, aunts, and uncles, Andrew and Elizabeth have been unable to work for a significant period of time, and the costs of her care will only continue to mount. Please consider contributing to this fund to assist the family as they work to restore Evie to full wellness and to her usual, spirited self.
