Send 10 Girls to Coding Camp

Donation protected
WHO AM I?

I'm a Mom of 2 girls, a web developer, and the Founder of  non-profit, Webgyrlz Code. A program that teaches girls how to code and, more importantly, take an interest in computer science at a young age.  We teach web development, introduce the girls to Scratch programming, and build confidence in them so they can be leaders in school and the community.

The program started as an idea in 2014, and in 2015 with help from the business community in Columbia, South Carolina, surrounding communities, and tech supporters online we were able to get funds to hold 2 coding camps.

WHAT AM I RAISING MONEY FOR?
I am raising money to allow 10 girls to come to the day coding camp on June 25, 2016 in Blythewood, SC for FREE! Our program provides EVERYTHING the girls need for the day. We have the laptops and coding software.  We provide lunch and snacks for the day.

The girls get to take home from camp a USB flash drive with the coding program and their website files they created at camp so they can continue to work on their websites. NO INTERNET NEEDED! So no matter where they live, if they have a Windows computer they can add to their sites.

An instruction manual with reminders of skills learned in camp also goes home with each camper.

They will also receive periodic e-newsletters with new elements they can code into their website, tips for coders, and cool online coding projects to try.

HOW WILL THE MONEY BE USED?
1. Purchase USB Flash Drives
2. Purchase Binders for Instruction Manuals
3. Printing Costs for Instructions Manuals
4. Lunch for 10 Campers and up to 5 volunteers
5. Snacks for 10 Campers and up to 5 volunteers
6. Tech help to check laptops and prepare them for camp
7. Tech help to prepare USB drives with Notepad++ text editor & images for websites
8. Room Rental Fee

HOW SOON WILL I NEED THE FUNDS?
By June 3 so USB drives and binders can be ordered and arrive in time. Also, any girls who are waiting to see if they can come to camp can notify their families.

WHY THIS MEANS SO MUCH TO ME:
I was the quiet, nerdy girl in school too scared to speak up and show I loved tech. I want girls to have the confidence to show that being into tech and computer science is cool and fun. I want them to take what they learn this Summer and start their 2016-2017 school year showing their teachers and classmates their new superpower: coding!

I want these girls to be the catalyst for change in our schools, not just for girls, but for everyone interested in computer science. I don't want any young lady to have to wait as long as I did to find their passion because their culture says that's "not for girls".

(It means so much to me I even did a TEDx Talk about it!)

I am still amazed at the change a day of coding can make in one girl's life. I have seen shy girls, become  leaders after a day in camp.  I have seen girls find their passion and take on coding as a daily challenge to learn more.
