We Go Global: Puerto Rico Relief

What's this about?
A group of young adults will be traveling to Puerto Rico this summer for 6 days (June 15-20) to assist in post-Maria disaster relief efforts in partnership with We Go Global . WGG is a non-profit Christian organization operating in Rincon, PR recommended to us by our pastor Dave Swaim, who volunteered with them last winter. We plan to participate in service projects such as food and water distribution, community clean-ups, and home repairs, as well as organize a sports day and college admissions counseling event for youth.
As a reminder, Hurricane Maria is regarded as the worst natural disaster on record in Puerto Rico. The Category 5 storm hit Puerto Rico this past September and is estimated to have been responsible for 500 to 1,000 deaths. In addition to lost lives, Puerto Rico suffered catastrophic damage to its infrastructure including the destruction of its electrical grid. During our trip we will be working with We Go Global to contribute to continued relief efforts in their time of rebuilding.
Our team also hopes to raise money to support the ongoing work We Go Global is undertaking in the community. We expect most, if not all funds to be spent during our trip, where we will purchase necessities and distribute where needs are greatest. Examples of commonly requested items include:
- Air conditioners
- Generators
- Personal care kits (toothpaste, toothbrushes, tampons, soap, shampoo)
- Water purification tablets
- Flashlights and small radios (solar/battery operated), bug spray
- First aid kits (bandaids, triple antibiotic, adhesive tape, iodine, peroxide, etc)
- Infant/baby kits (formula, thermometer, pacifier, wipes, diapers, diaper cream)
100% of proceeds from this fundraiser are intended to be used for the inhabitants of Puerto Rico with guidance from We Go Global leaders. We will not be using these funds for travel or lodging costs of team members.
How can I help?
There are many ways to get involved!
1. Donate! Give any amount to our cause and receive updates on how your money was used during our trip.* As a thank you to local donors for their generosity, we will be distributing gifts in the form of baked goods (cookies, bars, pie, etc). See below for more information on how to participate.
2. Join our prayer chain and receive weekly blasts with specific topics to pray over leading up to the trip. Contact Christine Oh to be added to the chain.
3. Come with us! We welcome more volunteers who have the heart and resources to serve. Fill in this application to start a conversation with us.
Baked Goods Giveaway (for donors)
As a part of our fundraising efforts, our team will be baking an assortment of goods to thank and distribute to our donors. Give online by Saturday, May 19th or by Saturday, June 2nd (TBC) and our team will prepare an assortment of homemade baked goods just for you!
