OS Library Expands: Watch Us Grow!

Tax deductible
The City of Ocean Shores was incorporated in 1970 with 900 full-time residents. The first Ocean Shores Library was opened in 1972. As the city grew, so did the library. In 1993 the library was opened at its current location – at 4200 sq. ft.. Twenty-five years later, we need more library space to serve our population, 6000 citizens. We are ready for expansion.

The Ocean Shores Friends of the Library group was founded at the beginning of the city and has been a moving force for maintaining library activities. As a 501(c)(3) organization, the group has donated both time and money and will monitor the GoFundMe donations. An avid Friend of the Library, June Kaba bequeathed her entire estate “to expand the library in it's current location.” We are ready to fulfill her wishes, planning to add ADA access to the building and increase total floor space by over 28%. The bequest is expected to cover the construction costs but we estimate we will need monies to purchase additional furniture for the space, such as book shelves, chairs and tables, signage, as well as for landscaping and moving services. Our GoFundMe Goal is $100,000.00.

The need for this expansion is great and will benefit the entire population of Ocean Shores. The meeting room hosts 49 - 51 individual meetings a month and is the only cost-free meeting room in the geographical area. The expansion will increase meeting space by 30%. Approximately 2,000 patrons utilize library services on a monthly basis. The average age of the Ocean Shores citizen is 57 years old and many seniors are on a fixed minimum income. Over 60% of the city's school-aged children qualify for a subsidized school breakfast and lunch. The City of Ocean Shores has no social community location for teens and youth -- no Boys & Girls Clubs or YMCA. There are no libraries in the Middle- or High School. Many city residents do not have computers or WiFi access. The library fills these needs with on-going programs and multi-use computers with internet connectivity. The City of Ocean Shores sits on the western edge of the North American continent, by the Pacific Ocean in Washington State. The Ocean Shores Library needs significant help to continue to serve the community and keeping the community in touch with the world.

The City, the Library Board of Trustees, and the Friends of the Library have approved a floor plan for the expansion and are ready to start. We are asking for GoFundMe donations as we have promised that NO TAX MONIES WILL BE USED FOR THIS PROJECT.

The impact of not receiving these funds would be great. Most of the current furniture is 25 years old and close to being worn out. The expansion will change the grounds and parking lot but no money has been earmarked to accommodate the change. Addition Shelving is needed.

We propose breaking ground for construction in the late fall, depending on monies raised. We need the GoFundMe Money in October 2018 to order items in time for construction completion.

Along with the Friends Of the Library officers, I will be the overseer of this fund.

PLEASE HELP US ACHIEVE OUR GOAL.
