Washington DC's Waterfront
Tax deductible
Sustainable Waterfronts is raising money to produce a 28 minute documentary film about the history and present of the Washington, D.C.'s Waterfront which has played an important role in the city's environmental change, racial ecology and economic development. The waterfront, we contend, has played a vital role in shaping the social identity of metropolitan Washington. The waterfront story in our time demonstrates that environmental burdens like pollution and resource depletion are not shared equally. Previously a relatively unknown story, the DC waterfront is emerging as a vital cultural and economic component of the city's urban development. We need to know the full story. Where the waterfront has been, what has happened and why its story has been neglected over the years. We feel that it is vitally important that we make this film for use in Washington's public schools, where so little local history is taught. We want to generate is a wider community context and more concern for Washington's waterfront -- both its legacy and its future
