PTSD Counseling for Veterans

Donation protected
As a retired U.S. Army veteran with 29 years of service,  numerous combat deployments, and practicing trauma therapist, I have a deep personal understanding of the toll war takes on our warriors. That’s why I have made it my mission to provide active-duty military with the treatment their minds and hearts need after coming back from the battlefield.

You might expect that the military takes care of its own. It doesn’t. Active-duty service-members suffering from post-traumatic stress, substance abuse and addiction, and mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI) very often only receive medications to treat the symptoms, rather than the therapy needed for healing root causes.  Often treatment consists of meeting once a month with a military psychiatrist to manage medicine.  Even worse—all this becomes part of the service-member’s military record, and so many are reluctant to seek the care they need. They may face repercussions from their unit, lose a security clearance, or lose their job.

Our warriors need opportunities to find treatment outside the military system. But paying for counseling out-of-pocket is usually out of their reach. A single counseling session costs $100—and on average, a person needs at least twelve counseling sessions to make substantial steps towards health.

That’s why I’m working to create a fund that will cover the cost of twelve counseling sessions each for 100 military service-members stationed at Fort Bragg, the nation’s largest and most-deployed military base. This fund will allow our warriors to focus on getting well without worrying about how they’ll pay for their counseling. It will be used to pay qualified therapists and counselors directly for the services they provide to active-duty military patients in need. Our goal is to make this resource available by December 31st.

I’ve experienced the kind of care the military provides for our men and women returning from combat. It isn’t good enough. Medication can’t heal wounds like these. Twenty-two veterans commit suicide every day—often because they’re unable to deal any longer with the hidden injuries they brought back from war. Many more struggle with their injuries in silence at a steep cost to themselves and their families. Our warriors deserve better care than they’re getting. You can help us give it to them.
