Wally's World Rebuilt

On the evening of Easter Sunday, the entire family was gathered at grandma's home in Fair Oaks and had just finished the Easter egg hunt when a passer-by stopped to let us know that there was smoke coming from the side of the house.  Grandson Dustin opened the side door to see the work shop in flames.  After using a full fire extinguisher, he instructed for everyone to get out of the house.  In less than two minutes all 20 people, 3 young children and 3 small dogs all evacuted the house; unfortunately there was no time to look for the two cats.  We crossed the street to safety and turned around to see the entire house in flames.  In less than 10 minutes the home was completely lost, along with 50+ years of memories and personal treasures.
While the fire fighters and grandsons were working on the home, grandson Justin heard a scream/meow coming from underneath one of the cars.  He looked and saw a soaking wet cat crying out in shock and pain.  He pulled him out and a fireman got him a burn blanket.  Wally was loaded up in a dog crate and rushed to VCA Sacramento Animal Medical Group at Madison and Manzanita.  Upon initial inspection, they gave Wally a relatively good prognosis, but were very cautious with proceeding.  He spent 20 hours in an oxygen chamber and received IV fluids and a massive amount of pain medication.  With just 24 hours in the hospital Wally was released.

Not having a home to go back too, Wally went home with the animal caretaker of the family, granddaughter Monica.  Since the fire, Wally has been travelling down the scary and unkowing path of rehabilitation.  When he first came to his "rehab" house he didn't look all that bad.  But within two days the blister that covered his face started to open and his skin started to slough off.  His left eye was also burned and sealed shut.  While Wally's journey to recovery has only just begun, even in 7 short days he's already been to the vet 5 times, had a feeding tube inserted and bandages changed 3 times.  And we're not done yet.  Wally has months of recovery, but every day he is getting stronger and better.  He gets fed upwards of 12 times a day, about 12 cc each time with 24 cc of water, along with pain medication 2-3 times a day, and SSD ointment for his burns and eye ointment for his eyes.

Many of our friends and family have asked how they can help.  While insurance is covering the structure and most of the contents (we're already starting to rebuild), they do not cover pets injured in fires.  This is where you can help!  Donate to "Wally's World Rebuilt" and help this fighting little guy get well and back home.  Also, if you have pets in  your home, check with your homeowners or renters insurance to check on a pet policy for your furry family.
