Walk for Jordan

Donation protected
Whitnall Middle School will be raising funds for the Guzman family at this year's 12th annual Walk-A-Thon which will take place on Friday, May 26. This is a time for our community to come together to help others in need. This year's fundraising event is near and dear to the Whitnall community as it involves one of our own. Jordan Guzman is an 8th grade student at WMS who has been battling cancer for the better part of the school year. We would love to help the family with medical bills and possibly allow them to do something special as a family as soon as Jordan is feeling better. Please help us out by donating and sharing this post.

From The Guzmans:

On January 17, 2017 Jordan was looking forward to a dinner and movie to celebrate Dad’s birthday. He was scheduled for his doctor’s appointment that day at 11:00 AM; little did we know just how much our lives were about to change. The doctor recommended that we take Jordan over to Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin so that they could run some tests to figure out what was wrong rather than wait for the clinic to send tests over that could take weeks. By 12:30 PM, we were told that Jordan had a brain tumor. The tumor had grown to a point that is was blocking the flow of his spinal fluids and not allowing it to drain properly. This caused swelling, which was why his walking was imbalanced and was also causing the flu like symptons. That same day, the doctors performed a surgery to place a stent to relieve the spinal fluid build up. He was scheduled for surgery to remove the tumor, January 19th. We were grateful that both surgeries were successful in relieving the fluid build up and removing most of the tumor. However there was a need for a third surgery as the doctors informed us that likely because of the fluid build up putting pressure on his skull, it was thinner than what they would have expected for a 13 year old boy, so the pins they used to hold his head in place during the surgery fractured his skull. They had to do another surgery to fix the fracture. The next day they realized there was air build up in the area where they fixed the fracture so they needed to do another surgery to place a second stent to remove the air pressure. This surgery also went well. I can’t really describe the rollercoaster ride that was those 4 days. But Jordan made it through and it did get better. The doctors warned us about the risks and side effects that could be caused by the surgery. Although Jordan experienced them, he is a strong kid and a trooper and has come a long way. Jordan was released from the Hospital February 3rd. His speech is a little slower and it's easier for him to get around in a wheelchair, but he is in good spirits and we were all just so happy for him to be home. He finished 6 weeks of radiation therapy and is recovering very well from that. He is currently undergoing physical and speech therepy to help get him back to the activities he loves, such as bike riding, skateboarding, swimming. He enjoys hanging out with his friends, family and playing video games with his little brother. We are gearing up for the other leg of the journey which is chemotherapy next month.
