Battle with Myasthenia:
Myasthenia Gravis is an autoimmune disease with no cure. My niece Nicole Russell was diagnosed February 14th, 2019 and has been battling this disease ever since. She has been in and out of the hospital numerous times these past 6 months including surgeries to remove her thymus, a thymoma and part of her left lung. Due to her illness she has missed work and received a letter that she will have to pay out of pocket for her medical benefits and expenses because you’re only allowed to be out 3 months. She has undergone Plasmapheresis Therapy which removes my blood from the body then separates the bad plasma from blood. Her blood is cleaned in a machine and healthy plasma substitute and cleaned blood are returned to her body. She also endures IVIG infusions which is a blood product prepared from serum of between 1000-15000 donors per batch. It’s used to prevent abnormal antibodies directed against one's own cells from working and preventing immune cells from being active. She has lost all mobility in her extremities and has had to rely on family, friends and nurses to help her out of bed, brush her hair, to try to walk and just every day activities we take for granted. She has an uphill battle ahead but she keeping her head up and staying strong.
