Fight for Allison

Donación protegida
In January of 2019, Allison began experiencing lower back pain.  The pain quickly progressed, radiating down her left leg. She was being treated by a variety of occupational health professionals (orthopedics, physical therapists, etc.), leading to little-to-no relief, and impacting her ability to do her job and to care for her two young children. The pain in her leg and hip significantly intensified on February 9, leading to Allison being unable to bear any weight to walk.  Given this progression, she sought diagnostic treatment at a local CT hospital.  Much to her entire family’s surprise, a CT scan and MRI revealed multiple lesions in the right breast, lung, liver, and bones (including leg, hip, and spine).  Given the number of lesions, the a diagnosis of cancer was strongly suspected and a second opinion was sought in Boston to confirm diagnosis and treatment options.

While hospitalized in Boston for 9 days in February, a diagnosis of Stage 4 Hormone - HER2+ metastic breast cancer was confirmed using a liver biopsy, with innumerable cancer sites metasticized to the lungs, liver, and bones.  While it is unknown exactly how long the disease has been spreading, the quick progression of symptoms gives doctors the impression that symptoms were likely expedited by her recent pregnancy.  Given the broad spread of disease, surgery to remove and cure the cancer is not possible.  It is hoped, however, that with the appropriate combination of life-long treatment options the disease can be managed for a significant length of time with improved quality of life.

While hospitalized in Boston, a significant breakdown and weakening of her hip bone (due to cancer) was discovered. A titanium rod was placed inside Allison’s left femur to prevent bone breakage and to enhance her ability to ambulate more independently.  She continues to require the use of a walker to navigate short distances within her home and a motorized chair lift to access the upstairs.  These limitations continue to impact Allison's ability to care for her young children (ages 7 months and 4.5 years) and to participate in day-to-day activities that were once taken for granted, i.e., showering, cooking, putting children to bed.

After gaining clearance from Boston orthopedics and oncologists, it was planned for Allison to begin treatment with radiation to the leg, hip, and spine on March 4.  However, on March 2nd acute pain in the liver resulted in calling 911 and culminated in an additional 11 day hospitalization at a local CT hospital.  During this time, it was determined that chemotherapy was required immediately to decrease the spread of the disease and Allison has received 2 rounds of chemotherapy to this date.  After her most recent hospital release on March 12, she has been receiving a variety of local in-patient and out-patient treatments in attempt to gain control of the disease and to extend her life span.

Given her current state , Allison is obviously unable to work as a Behavior Analyst in an autism program.  This coupled with her recent maternity leave has resulted in a direct loss of over half of the family’s household income.  Allison is in for the  fight of her life, and she is ready to take it on.  However, she needs our help to take the obvious financial burden off of her plate.   Allison is willing to do whatever it takes to improve her quality of life and time with husband and two young daughters<3
