Help Milena Fight Recurrent Breast Cancer

Milena is my only sister and my best friend. We grew up in Brazil with a big family and we were very close to all of our cousins. Milena was the oldest of all of us, she was our leader, our protector, and the one who would come up with the most creative and fun games for us to play. She has always shown so much compassion and love for us as kids and even when we got older and moved to the US she decided to work as a nanny. She has also worked as a singer, entertaining, making the crowd smile. She has happily dedicated many years of her life caring for children of all ages. We have always said that one day we would have kids together so they could have each other to play like we had our cousins.


Unfortunately in 2015 she found out that she had breast cancer and the mutation in BRCA2 gene, which tends to develop breast and ovarian cancers. Following her right breast mastectomy she underwent radiation and hormone therapy. Due to post surgical complications her breast could not be reconstructed until 2019.

Sadly, shortly after the reconstruction on the right breast was over, an MRI detected two masses on the right side again. A PET scan, ultra sound, and biopsy later confirmed that one of the masses was cancerous (malignant), although there was no sign of spread in other parts of her body. She was informed that the tumor was in one place, so at least there was a reason to celebrate.

At that point the doctors told her to stop taking the cancer medication (Tamoxifen) that she had been taking and struggling with it for four years and scheduled the biggest surgery of her life.

 When we thought the fight was almost over, on July 3rd 2019, Milena had a long and painful double mastectomy and bilateral tissue expander placed on top of the muscle. Both masses from the right breast plus a lymph node from the left side were removed and sent to the lab. The surgery took almost eight hours and she had lost a lot of blood.She also had a tough and painful comeback, but at least she was so excited and happy to spread the news to everyone, including Mom, that she was cancer free.

The worst was yet to come.  A couple of weeks later the doctors told us that even though the masses were successfully removed there were still cancerous cells left inside her chest muscle that could migrate to other parts of her body. They also found another small tumor at the margins of the outer chest muscle removed along with the main one. They then explained that a recurrent cancer, despite the fact that she had been on hormone therapy, in less than 4 years is very rare and it was going to potentially be very difficult to treat.  So since this type of cancer is invasive and very aggressive, the doctors recommended that she induced menopause which meant no babies.


After the terrifying news I knew part of what was going on through her head… After all that struggle, pain, and suffering, how could she go through all of this again? When is it going to be over? Why? Plus now our dream to have kids around the same time is destroyed! She will never breast feed and now they are going to put her ovaries to “sleep”!?

 For us, cousins are something really special, they are like siblings that don’t annoy you as much, they protect one another, and they help you build funny childhood memories and stories that will last a life time. Unfortunately everyone is still back in Brazil and from our blood family we only have each other here in the US. So I would feel really lucky to give my sister hope that this dream to build a family here is still possible.
 
One of the biggest costs we are facing now is the one to freeze her eggs and the (fertility treatment), which is all out of pocket.  Although her health insurance has been able to cover many of her medical costs it will not be enough to cover everything. Another big debate about her insurance is that, in order to keep it valid, patients are not allowed to have enough income to survive around this area. It doesn`t make sense, but that`s the system.

The plan now is to do a very aggressive hormone therapy with medications, one monthly injection, (also to prevent ovarian cancer), radiotherapy, possible chemotherapy, and finally reconstructive surgery. This means that she will undergo the side effects of all drugs administrated plus surgical consequences, so she won’t be able to work for a while. Not only she is going through a very difficult time mentally and physically, she is also facing the financial burden a cancer diagnosis can inflict on someone’s life.

The treatment itself can cause infertility, increase its risks in pregnancy and since she is already 39 years old she doesn’t have much time left. The eggs will be harvested, frozen, and stored to be used for IVF until Milena is able to go back to her normal activities cancer free. Unfortunately, these procedures are very expensive and even though she has a 50% discount on the fertility treatment,since the issues are due to cancer, it would still cost about $25.000,00 up front, no discussion.  Additional costs are for medications, consultations, travel costs, rent, food.. everything adds up and she can`t abandon the place of her treatment  at this point.

For many years Milena devoted her life to bring happiness to the crowd, children, and cousins. Now she is the one in need of happiness. Today you can truly make a difference by making it a little easier on her struggle and keeping our dream to build a family in the US alive. Even if you think you don’t have much to give, we will be grateful for any amount. Would you be so kind to share her story to improve her chance to reach this goal? Milena é minha única Irmã e minha melhor amiga. Nós crescemos no Brasil numa grande familia e éramos muito próximas aos nossos primos. Milena era a mais velha de todos nós, ela era nossa lider,nossa proteção, e aquela que inventava as brincadeiras e jogos mais criativos pra a gente brincar.

Ela sempre demonstrou seu amor e compaixão a nós quando pequenos. Depois que crescemos e nos mudamos para os Estados Unidos ela trabalhou muitos anos cuidando e educando crianças.

Ela também entretia platéias, trabalhando como cantora, aonde sempre levava  sorrisos e alegria por onde passava, mas sempre trabalhando ao lado de crianças de todas as idades. Nós sempre dissemos que um dia teriamos filhos juntas, para que eles também pudessem ter a alegria de crescer ao lado dos primos.

 Infelizmente em 2015, ela descobriu o cancer de mama e a mutação genética BRCA2, que possibilita canceres de mama e ovários.  Após sua mastectomia do seio direito ela seguiu com tratamentos de radioterapia e controle hormonal. Entretanto devido a complicações pós cirúrgicas seu seio só aguentaria uma reconstrução em 2019.

Uma outra triste notícia nos abateu logo após o término de sua reconstrução. Uma ressonância detectou a recorrência de duas massas novamente no lado direito. Os resultados do PET scan, ultrason e biópsia vieram confirmar que alí ainda havia cancer.

A partir dalí os médicos a instruíram parar o tratamento com o (tamoxifeno) que ela vinha tomando há quatro anos e a maior de todas as suas cirurgias logo então foi agendada.

Quando nós havíamos pensado que a luta tinha quase acabado, em 3 de Julho de 2019, Milena teve uma longa e dolorosa mastectomia bilateral, com a inserção de expansores acima dos músculos peitoráis. As duas massas, mais um linfonodo da axila esquerda foram removidos e então enviados ao laboratório.

O pior ainda estava por vir. Passaram-se alguns dias enquanto aguardavamos o resultado da patologia do tumor e tecidos retirados que foram enviados para estudo.

Milena estava esperançosa e muito feliz após esta grande cirurgia, achando que seu sofrimento maior havia passado e que estava livre de cancer, mas fomos logo informadas pela equipe médica, que a pesar das massas terem sido removidas com sucesso, ainda haviam células cancerígenas no músculo peitoral e pele, que ainda poderiam migrar para outras partes do corpo.

Eles também adcionaram que a recorrência de um cancer,em menos de 4 anos em pacientes fazendo o uso do tamoxifeno é muito raro e que potencialmente seria muito difícil tratá-lo. Como este tipo de cancer é invasivo e muito agressivo, também será recomendado indução à menopausa o que a impossibilitará de ter filhos.

 Após notícias aterrorizantes eu podia sentir a dor e imaginar parte do que minha irmã estava passando emocionalmente. Após todo o seu sacrifício, tantas lágrimas e o sofrimento da longa jornada, como ela acharia forças para passar por tudo isso novamente? Quando será que o pesadelo vai acabar e porque tanto sofrimento? Além do mais nossos sonhos de termos filhos juntas está também destruído!? A verdade é que minha irmã nunca poderá amamentar um filho e agora eles irão por seus ovários para dormir.

 Para nós, primos são algo muito especial, são nossos parentezinhos que não nos abusam como os outros, tipo os adultos! Nós protegemos uns aos outros e ajudamos a construir memórias engraçadas da nossa infancia que irão nos alegrar e durar pra o resto das nossas vidas.

Infelizmente todos os primos ficaram no Brasil e da nossa família de Pai e Mãe, apenas somos nós duas aqui nos Estados Unidos. Portanto eu seria muito grata se tivermos como implantar de volta a esperança no coração de Milena, e que ainda podemos construir nossa família juntas.

 Um dos maiores custos que nós estamos enfrentando no momento é o da clínica de fertilidade e congelamento de óvulos. Apesar do seu seguro de saúde cobrir boa parte do seus custos médicos, ele não é suficiente para cobrir todos.

A realidade agora é ela encarar uma terapia hormonal ainda mais agressiva que a anterior, com mudanças de medicações e tentar prevenir futuras metástasis e cancer de ovários, radioterapia, possivelmente quimioterapia para só então poder finalizar com as cirurgias reconstrutivas.

Isso implica não poder trabalhar por um tempo. São condições difíceis de se lidar, mentalmente e fisicamente. Mas ela também encara o impedimento financeiro que o diagnóstico de um cancer pode infligir na vida de alguém.

 Tratamentos de cancer podem causar infertilidade, aumentar seus riscos na gravidêz, e como Milena já tem 39 anos, ela não tem mais tempo a perder. Os óvulos precisam ser congelados e armazenados agora, para só então serem utilizados após o término do tratamento pós a ausência de cancer no organismo.

 Tais tratamentos e procedimentos porém, têm custos muito altos e particulares, onde temos que pagar do próprio bolso se quisérmos soluções.

São medicamentos de fertilização, medicações do tratamento da doença, consultas, transporte, aluguel, alimento... tudo isso adciona ao problema e não podemos dispensá-los.

Hà muitos anos Milena dedicou sua vida e carreira proporcionando felicidade ao seu público, a crianças e aos primos. Mas agora é ela quem precisa de um pouco de felicidade e você pode com certeza fazer a diferença mantendo nossa esperança viva, de construir uma família. E mesmo que não tenha muito a doar, aos poucos chegaremos lá. Ficaremos gratas por qualquer quantia que seja!
