Emergency Fund for North Nicaragua

Donation protected
It is with heavy hearts that over the past few months we have witnessed growing civil unrest in our beloved Nicaragua. What started on April 19th as peaceful protests over social security changes quickly escalated into a nationwide movement when the government responded with violence against the protestors. Although the proposed changes were quickly rescinded, the unrest has continued across the country. Protestors have remained steadfast in their call for justice for those who have died, the resignation of the President, and the establishment of a democratic and peaceful Nicaragua.

Over the past decade Nicaragua has become a promising destination for both tourists and investors. In 2008, we opened Coco Loco Eco-Resort with the goal of introducing the world to our community in beautiful northern Nicaragua with its warm and friendly inhabitants. Along with this sustainable tourism project, we sought to support the local communities through the fundraising and volunteer efforts of our non-profit Waves of Hope. And we are proud to have made an impact. We’ve seen positive and tangible changes in education, infrastructure, health and prosperity with over $400,000 invested into development initiatives.  At the same time, we’ve employed 25 full-time staff and supported many other families through secondary and part-time work. We have prided ourselves on our local-only hiring practice and maintaining our ‘by-the-book’ method of operation. We have been fortunate to call Nicaragua home, and our staff and guests are very much our extended family.

The current political instability has naturally had an immediate negative affect on the number of tourists travelling to Nicaragua. Ensuring both the safety of our guests and the welfare of our staff has weighed heavily on us. Despite our best efforts to remain operational, Coco Loco has been forced to temporarily close its doors. We are acutely aware of the hardship that unemployment places on our staff and their families. Like us, we know that as guests and Waves of Hope supporters, many of you hold a special place in your hearts for our wonderful staff. And like us, we know that you are anxious to help them during this difficult time. We’ve therefore created this page to raise both awareness and funding for our community and our staff, and to help ensure that Coco Loco and Waves of Hope make it through this challenging time. We thank you for your generosity. Donations will be allocated based on the most immediate needs and go towards ensuring that basic needs continue to be met.

Yes, these are difficult times but we stand with the people of Nicaragua as they fight against repression, as they stand up for their human rights, as they call for justice. We look forward to a new day in Nicaragua when peace prevails and we can welcome you back to our slice of paradise. Until then we greatly appreciate your assistance and ongoing support.
