Visit Care for Wild

Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary is expanding.

Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary NPC is situated in a growing nature reserve. The sanctuary was initially established on a 350ha property, and has already grown to 4,500 ha. The ultimate goal is to grow the sanctuary to 85,000 ha.

The nature reserve has a detailed environmental management plan in place which ensures that the reserve is managed at the highest standards. The reserve carries various species that have naturally occurred in the area. Our ultimate aim is to ensure that the habitat eventually carries all the species that naturally occur.

Securing the Reserve:

As CFW brings together a number of orphaned rhino into one facility this drastically increases the overall risk to these animals while they are housed at the centre. To counter this risk we have developed a concise strategy to ensure the safety and security of the rhinos under our care.

We are committed to maintaining the highest level of protection possible. Such security measures will include:

- Fencing and Cameras: The bomas, night pens, and facilities will be protected by a security system which will include a 2.4m high electric security fence. The whole area will be under surveillance using cameras which are monitored on a 24 hour basis, and backed up with an appropriate armed response team. Motion detectors will monitor the fences. Trained personnel will monitor the cameras and motion detectors in a fully equipped operations centre. Police authorities will be contacted in the event of a poaching attempt.

- Game Scouts: Game scouts will patrol the facility and monitor the individual rhino groups on a 24-hour basis. Highly trained guards protecting the sanctuary will be armed, and equipped with a personal radio that will be in direct contact with the Operations Centre and the anti-poaching manager.

- Armed Reaction: The Operations Centre will have access to a trained armed reaction team who will be able to respond and be onsite within 5 minutes of an alert.

- Other: Trained counter poaching dogs and their handlers, watch towers and aerial support will be included in the protection programme.
