Chatopia Cat Rescue is a Canadian charitable volunteer organization dedicated to the health, safety and welfare of abandoned, abused and neglected cats that specializes in purebreeds. We received a distress call for help from animal control just south of Montreal, Quebec concerning more than 75 purebred cats living in unfathomable conditions in a kitten mill. All the cats were removed by the police and 45 of them were placed in Chatopia’s care.

Highland lynx, Savannahs, Chausies, and Mohava bobs. EVERY single cat exhibited signs of neglect from malnutrition, upper respitory infections, eye infections, ear infections, severe dehydration, open wounds, a cat with broken back and a few with their tails cut off. These cats were dying. Litters of kittens were born dead. Their mothers too weak, dehydrated and too full of infection to help them survive. Once they arrived at Chatopia, our amazing volunteers jumped into action where each cat received a warm bed, food, clean litter and fresh water.

Over the next few days each cat was given a full medical exam. EVERY single cat had some form of eye, ear or upper respiratory infection. We also saw bladder infections, open sores, oozing open wounds, even a fused spin from a tail being cut off. Treatment was started immediately but with little effect. A second type of antibiotic proved to be just as ineffective. A third round of treatment, blood tests and bacterial cultures finally resulted in a diagnosis - a very rare bacterial infection, and rarely seen in cats. Treatment has been very costly and long term. Each day, for hours on end we cuddled and nursed these angels back to health.

This, sadly, has come at a great cost to our rescue. Well over $15,000 of medical expenses to save these kitten mill survivors. The bacteria they have is so unusual and extremely resistant that we have to close our doors to our center. We applied for a grant but we were not chosen as it was based on popularity.
Right now, our volunteers are cleaning the entire shelter with our own personal funds!
Our mission is to continue to help purebred cats in crisis but we cannot without donations from caring people like you. We want to continue to save felines from neglect and abuse.
