Voyage à Washington

Le 14 février dernier, un homme a abattu quatorze étudiants et trois membres du personnel de l'école secondaire Marjory Stoneham Douglas à Parkland en Floride, l'une des plus meurtrières fusillades aux États-Unis en milieu scolaire. Cette horrible tuerie a encore une fois ébranlé les américains et ramené à l'agenda politique le besoin d'un meilleur contrôle des armes à feu.

Au premier rang des manifestants, les étudiants de Parkland qui dirigent un mouvement à travers les États-Unis. Ils organisent une marche à Washington le 24 mars prochain afin de réclamer un meilleur contrôle des armes, dont l'interdiction des armes d'assaut. Des manifestations auront lieu dans une multitude de villes américaines dans le même esprit.

Plusieurs marches s'organisent également au Canada en appui, incluant à Montréal  et dans les environs, et nous comptons y participer. Déjà des milliers d'étudiants canadiens ont montré leur solidarité  avec les étudiants américains.

Polysesouvient s'associe à ce mouvement et entend participer à la marche à Washington si nous pouvons lever les fonds nécessaires. MERCI de nous appuyer avec un petit don, pour que nous puissions montrer aux américains que nous aussi nous croyons que le lobby des armes ne devrait plus dicter les lois touchant la sécurité publique.

Rappelons que ce sont les étudiants de Polytechnique qui ont initié le mouvement canadien ayant mené aux plus grandes avancées canadiennes en matière de contrôle des armes à feu. En fait, des étudiants, diplômés, survivants et familles de victimes associés à la tragédie à Polytechnique continuent de se battre pour de meilleurs contrôles, étant donné les dommages causés par le gouvernement précédent aux gains législatifs que nous avons obtenus dans la foulée de l'assassinat de nos quatorze consœurs. Nous aussi, nous devons continuer à nous battre pour interdire les mêmes armes d'assaut ayant servi dans les récentes tueries de masse chez nos voisins du sud, armes qui sont tout aussi légales ici au Canada. Malgré l'appui d'une grande majorité de la population, le projet de loi sur les armes que vient de déposer le gouvernement libéral ne contient pas la mesure et est généralement très fabile. Le lobby des armes dicte les lois canadiennes aussi!

Last February 14th, a 19 year-old shot and killed fourteen students and three staff members at the Marjory Stoneham Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, — one of the deadliest school shootings in the history of the United States. The tragedy horrified Americans and reignited the debate regarding the urgent need for better gun control.

Only this time, it's different. At the forefront: the Parkland students who are leading a  popular movement for gun control across the country. They are organizing a massive march in Washington on March 24 to demand stonger gun control, including a ban on assault weapons.  Demonstrations will take place in countless cities across the country.

Several marches are also being organized in Canada, including in Montreal and its surrounding areas, and we certainly will  taking part in them! Already, thousands of Canadian students have shown their solidarity with the American students.

Poly Remembers would like to be associated with this movement and intends on participating in the Washington march, if we can raise the necessary funds. So THANK YOU for supporting this project with a small donation. We want to show Americans that we, too, believe that the gun lobby shouldn’t dictate laws that affect public safety. 

It's interesting to recall that, in 1989, Polytechnique students launched the Canadian movement that led to the greatest advances in terms of gun control measures. Indeed, students, graduates, survivors and families of victims associated with the tragedy at Polytechnique continue to fight to this day for stricter controls, given the damage inflicted by our previous government on  the legislative gains that were achieved in the wake of the 1989 slaughter of our fourteen sisters. We also want to ban semi-automatic assault weapons, the same ones that were used in recent mass killings in the US, that are also legal here in Canada.  Despite the support of the vast majority of Canadians, the Liberal governement's proposed gun control bill does not contain the measure and is generally extremely weak. The gun lobby dictates our laws here too!
