We are asking for donations to fund our first international middle school trip to India.
Trilok is a school founded on the principals of Gandhi. We are a unique school where meditation and yoga are a part of the daily curriculum. We are also an international school, in that we see ourselves as citizens of the world in the same way that we see ourselves as a part of our Ft. Greene, Brooklyn community. For these reasons, we are thrilled to embark upon a ten day, service/learning trip to Ahemedabad, India, the birthplace of Gandhi. In Ahemedabad, we will visit Gandhi’s Ashram to learn about his life and principals. We will attend the Shreyas School, a private day school in Ahemedabad, where we’ll see first hand how students in India experience learning. During the weekend, we’ll travel to a local remote village and volunteer at one of the government schools. Getting a different perspective on life in India.
This trip relates to our curriculum in that Gandhi is a school hero of ours, a person of interest whom we are always eager to learn more about. Our peace curriculum, during the time of the trip will focus thematically around Justice. In school, we’ll look at justice through the lens of the Civil Rights Movement and when we get to India, we’ll examine Gandhi’s passive resistance philosophy and how it inspired various Civil Rights leaders. In addition to the Civil Rights Movement, we are participating in the Amnesty International Write for Rights campaign and are learning about Pavitri Manjhi, a Human Rights Defender on behalf of the Adivasi Indigenous community in India who was harassed for standing up to big business. We’ve started to look into some of the social inequities in India as well as some of the human right’s violations that have made the national news.
The students are all eager to visit India. We’d like for all students to be able to join us. We don’t want anyone left out of the group due to an inability to pay. We thank you in advance for your support.
