Hi there! My name is Emilie Seitz and I am a passionate optometry student at Salus University’s Pennsylvania College of Optometry.
My Trip:
May 13-19th, 2018 I will be traveling to Pont Sonde, Haiti to provide my optometric services and serve members in the local community. I will be traveling with like-hearted colleagues as part of the Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity (VOSH).
· Over one billion people lack access to glasses.
· That means that 15% of the world’s population is unable to effectively learn or work because they can’t see clearly.
· Vision means access to health, income, and education.
My Role:
During my trip, the team and I will work to examine upwards of 1200 – 1500 people in a week. We will also pack some 5000 pairs of RX glasses, sunglasses, hats (very desirable for the locals) to be given out. We usually do three days of clinic at the health center and two days of remote clinics (perhaps at a church, school, community center or other remote location). Everybody will work to their maximum capacity to accomplish required tasks!
We will see many cases of glaucoma, cataracts, trauma, and potentially even trachoma (the number one cause of blindness in the world). Trachoma results from poor sanitation and is almost never seen in developed nations. We will be either treating these conditions on-site or arranging for treatment. VOSH will pay for the cost of the surgeries using various funds including those generated by the trip fee.

Round Trip Fare: $692
Trip Fee: $690 (includes room/board)
Haiti Entry/Exit Fee: $10-30
Immunizations: $350

What it Means to Me:
It will be the adventure of a lifetime. I’ll experience people living in unbelievable poverty and hardship, but also see the strength of humanity when faced with incredible adversity. I look forward to being part of this opportunity to aid those in need and hope that you choose to assist me in that mission.
