Miss New York Teen USA - Sponsors

Donation protected
If you told me that I would one day be in a beauty pageant, I would have laughed in your face and said "when hell freezes over". I guess today is the day hell froze over. My name is Victoria and I am currently a freshman at Vassar College. Aside from the pageant, on my free time, I dedicate my efforts in training for fencing and am part of the Women’s Epee Fencing Team at Vassar College, and do Korean Hip-Pop dancing at I Love Dance. I am also a current silver medal holder of the United States Congressional Award with respect to volunteer services. As of 10/18/16, I found out I have been selected as a state finalist in the Miss New York Teen USA competition. However, there is a registration and sponsorship fee that I will need to raise in increments, coming out to a grand total of $2195. Any donations, shares, or getting my goals out there by word of mouth would be greatly appreciated. At the end of the sponsorship period, your name or company will be listed under my name in the Miss New York Teen USA pageant.

My story does not start with dreams of a young girl wanting to become a princess as she grew older. It started with growing up in an Asian-American household and moving multiple times into primarily white neighborhoods. At a young age, the obvious appearance difference from my peers did not faze me, yet I knew I was “different” in the sense that I did not look like the others. I did not follow conventional beauty standards and would often be called different because I did not look like them. For this reason, I was chased by the boys during recess, and the girls either wanted to be my friend or stayed clear of me. Young children are aware of their own self-image and often times, issues arise during adolescence. I wanted to change the way I looked and fell slave to society in which I began to dress differently and wanted to dye my hair, so that I would be able to look like the others, but little did I know that it would take much more than that.

Over two back to back summers, I worked with a program called the GoProject where I was a teacher’s aid in helping academically struggling, low-income elementary school kids how to fence in association with Fencer’s Club. Because of my commitment to the kids, I turned down a scholarship to a summer program at Barnard-Columbia College, but do not regret my decision. I was reminded of my personal experiences confronting self-image issues when I saw that many of these kids struggled with how they looked and would let comments affect their self-esteem. Of these students, the majority were from minority backgrounds and they also felt as if they did not follow conventional beauty standards. It was disheartening, but a very real issue, to see these kids feel bad about themselves based on what society deems “beautiful”. Competing in Miss New York Teen USA will allow me the oppurtunity to show people that beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder, and it is okay to be “different” or break away from societal norms as long as you have faith in yourself. Although I do not know where my future will take me next, I believe that taking a leap of faith and becoming an inspiration to other minorities will be a step in changing the way society views what “beautiful” is.
