Guerilla Gardeners Need MORE!

Donation protected

This summer The BuHi Project is going to be launching the Guerilla Gardening Initiative! Every Friday morning during the months of June and July, students from Cross Keys High School will be beautifying the Buford Highway corridor with plants and flowers!

What is The BuHi Project?
The BuHi Project emerged from discussions we had in class about why it's important to be involved in one's community. Our neighborhood is home to people from all over the world. On Buford Highway, we have many different kinds of food and cultural experiences, but it lacks sidewalks, bike lanes, and other amenities that our community values.

This project tangibly connects what we do in school to what happens in our community. While collaborating with community members and classmates, we have also learned about city planning, urban design, engineering, pedestrian considerations, transportation infrastructure, affordable housing, city governance, public speaking, and community involvement.

Our summer project is going to be improving our BuHi land use through the art of Guerilla Gardening.

What is Guerilla Gardening?
Guerrilla gardening is the act of gardening on land such as an abandoned site, an area that is not being cared for, or private property. It encompasses a diverse range of people and motivations, but The BuHi Project is using it to provoke change by using guerrilla gardening as a form of protest/direct action. This practice has implications for land rights and land reform, aiming to promote re-consideration of land ownership in order to assign a new purpose or reclaim land that is perceived to be in neglect or misused.

Where will we be gardening?
The land that is guerrilla gardened is usually abandoned or perceived to be neglected. You know those nasty patches of dirt alongside the road or at the bus stop? We're going to start taking care of that!

What do we need to get started?
-Plant & flower donations (full sun and partial sun plants)
-Potting soil
-Seeds
-Shovels
-Trowels
-Garden waste bags
-Mulch
-Stones
-$25 for signage
-Anything else you would like to donate!
