VEX IQ Robotics Team Support

Our names are Lisa Hillman and Erin Lowry. We are teachers in Baltimore City Schools as well as co-coaches for our school’s VEX IQ robotics club. This is our second year participating with VEX IQ. Last year we started out with one team and this year we will be adding a second due to student interest. The two teams consist of approximately ten students in grades 4 through 8 at a multicultural urban school that is 60% Latino and 50% ESOL. The teams are student-led, with members collaborating to design, build and test their robots. Students are challenged to both drive and program their robots, in addition to presenting a science-fair like STEM project at meets.
We are in need of our own field and the new 2016 VEX IQ game kit, Crossover. The game changes each year, and in order to properly prepare for meets, we need to practice several times weekly. After examining the new game, we have also determined that we will most likely need additional parts to design competitive robots for this year’s game. Finally, we would also like to purchase at least one license for RobotC Virtual Worlds. The school district generously provides licenses for RobotC, the programming language that we are using with our robots, but the additional of Virtual Worlds would allow students who are programming to test their programs on a virtual copy of our robot while others are building.
Purchasing the kits for the team would be money that would be spent and utilized immediately, as the school year began August 29th, and we want to hit the ground running. These items would be greatly appreciated and utilized by each of the team members now and in future years.
