2016 was a tough year for Veronica and Lorenzo.
Veronica was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her son Diego, a fifth grader, was diagnosed with asthma that added to the already costly medical expenses. Her husband Lorenzo, a truck driver, has back problems due to a bacteria that forced him to take two months off from his job. On their yearly trip to deliver gifts to children in Mexico, their pickup was broken into. Among many personal items stolen were all of Diego's medicine for his asthma.
As all this went on, the hospital bills mounted. They now owe over $50,000 in hospital bills and the hospital has started garnishing their wages to try to collect.
How They Got Here
After losing their house and trucking business in Las Vegas, because of an economic down spiral in 2011, they moved to Sidney, MT where Lorenzo was asked to join a trucking company. When they arrived in Sidney, they lived in an office space sharing a bathroom with several other truck drivers. Veronica, with her determination and skills for decorating, turned their tiny space into a comfortable living area until they could afford to move into better housing. The business folded when the owner suddenly passed away.
At the present, Lorenzo continues to work for a construction company, but his working hours have been cut back due to the slowdown in the oil field. Veronica is working as a supervisor at a local business. She has held that position since 2015. Before that, she worked as a medical assistant.
Veronica takes pride helping people. She spends spare time at yard sales collecting used toys and clothes for less fortunate children. She also sponsors a child sending him much needed school supplies, clothes, and other necessities he needs.
Even after all of this, I’ve never seen Veronica and Lorenzo without a smile on their faces. These are the most upbeat, optimistic people you’ll ever meet.
