Recover my life

I was a very successful teacher of gifted children for 36 years. I retired from the classroom in 1997. I began my career at age 17, something unheard of today. After retirement, I continued to educate teachers on how to integrate technology into the curriculum. Then in 2004 at age 61 my longtime partner of 20 years died from a stroke and at the same time I was diagnosed as HIV possitive. The medications to keep me alive cost over $1400 a month. I had Extended Medical Insurance but it covered a maximum of $750 a year. Subsidy from government sources was not available to me because I had a substantial pension. For 4.5 years I had to use my well established credit to purchase my medications. At age 65 here in Canada the drugs that have kept me alive became "free" because I was then a senior citizen. BUT I had a $65,000 debt. I vowed to repay it and went to credit counselling to do it. I struggled each month to meet living expenses and repay the debt. By 2008 I decided to obtain a part time job to suppliment my income. I was offered a full time job and earned twice customer service awards for my work. Finally, in 2012 I gave up my lifetime joy, my cottage, to pay off the whole debt which I did. Now, 2015, Taxation Canada has assessed my income over the years and is demanding a return of $91,000 because they were paying me Old Age  Security to which I was not entitled because my income exceeded the Canadian maximum allowable  to receive the OAS. That amount includes interest and penalties. I have signed through a Bankruptcy Trustee a Consumer Proposal to repay $51,000 over the next five years. That is $850 a month. It leaves me after shelter and utilities an income of about $600 a month for food,  gas, pet food and repairs to my aging house.

How would you survive if you were 61 and found you had to pay out $1400 a month to stay alive? I did it but now at age 74 I have nothing after a remarkable life of educating people both in schools and in retail situations.

I am asking for  nothing more than support to have a life that I thought would be mine after devotion to enriching the lives of others.

Non-perishble foods all have additives that I cannot consume. One grows soon sick of pasta, peanut butter and Habitant Pea Soup! The vegetables given by the food bank are enough for three days and most are close to rotten. Bread products are all stale and mold the day after you thaw them out.

I have exactly $.66 in my bank account and no gas to go and buy food if I had money to do it. There are two weeks left in February and I have an $1178.02 hydro bill to pay. You will remember that we had close to a one thousand dollar car repair to do and I had only the hydro money with which to pay for it and get the car back from Canadian Tire. Meanwhile the car sits empty of gas.

The Olympics are entertainment but getting out of the house would be a welcomed change of scenery.

I still require the support of my friends. This post is Public and can be shared with your friends should they also wish to help me.

I have been knocked absolutely flat. We went to Kanata to shop for pet food and other house supplies. While waiting to turn from Hazeldean Road onto Terry Fox Drive the car engine stopped. Joey was driving. He was able to restart the car but when trying to turn the car there was no power steering. We pulled into Mr.Lube and they opened the hood.

The serpentine belt was completely shredded. They could not fix it so we drive to Canadian Tire. They could not complete the repair that day so we were stuck with a carload of groceries and pet food and no way to get home to Perth. Further, we had no way to rent a car because we have no credit cards.

A friend from Perth came to get us and drive us home. Today, the car was fixed, but the repair was $646. I had to borrow a friend’s car to go to get it. That cost me another $25 for gas.

To pick up the car I had to pay using all of the money I had left to pay my house and car insurance and my car loan payment. I am really now in a horrible state. We have nothing at all and still bills to pay.

If you can help me cover my $850 for insurance and the car loan, I would really appreciate any contribution.

WHAT IS POVERTY?

What is poverty? My annual income exceeds the clawback for OAS. With Revenue Canada demanding a $91,000 payback I cannot afford to buy food and need the services of the local foodbank. All of this problem arose because I had to pay $1400 a month for meds for 4 ½ years because my extended medical insurance as a retired teacher only paid a maximum of $750 a year. When I asked for assistance from Ontario Trillium Drug they said that with my teaching pension I was not qualified for assistance. You do the math! 4.5 years times 12 months times $1400 a month. Yes $65,000 debt at age 65 when the meds became virtually free because I became a senior citizen. For three months supply I now pay 62 cents! Yet I have lost everything and I am in poverty!

This GoFundMe is to keep me from losing my home! I am now paying $1850 a month for the next 26 months. I have completed 34 months of my Consumer Proposal. I have no credit. I have no contingency funds when something needs repair.

Just hope that you never need meds not covered by insurance. I had retired. Medical Insurance would cover my meds if I had been still teaching because group plans include things that are never covered by private insurance.

Some have understood my plight since they first learned about it. Their support, that of my friends, and especially of my former students have kept me positive in facing what might have destroyed many. They will never be forgotten should my financial position be reversed by pure luck.

One supporter captured this exactly with “Every crack, in every system found you.”

The saddest reality was the infidelity of a partner that I loved and with whom I lived for 18 wonderful years that caused the whole situation. That crack can never be patched. That can never change. My financial situation will.

Until it does change, I still need help. Please help me.
