Venue for the Beardsley Symposium

Donation protected
Marking 120 years since Aubrey Beardsley’s death, The Eve of St Aubrey: Re†Collecting Beardsley (1872-1898) is bringing together established and emerging scholars of the artist to examine his works, his public image, and his new – global – place in the art canon. The interdisciplinary symposium aims to unlock the geographical and chronological boundaries of the ‘Beardsley Period’ by reassessing the artist’s international reception and the impact of his aesthetics on modern movements in art, literature, ballet, cinema, and fashion.

A conversation with Professor Linda Gertner Zatlin, the author of Aubrey Beardsley: A Catalogue Raisonné (Yale UP, 2016) will open the symposium. It will be followed by presentation of acclaimed and emerging scholars of the artist and concluded with a reading of Masks and Phases - a Beardsleyesque dialogue by the artist's biographer Matthew Sturgis. The conference pack includes some previously unpublished Beardsley-related material, generously printed for the occasion by Simon Wilson.

Although the financial planning for the symposium relied on the free venue provided by Birkbeck School of Arts, we have decided to relocate the symposium in solidarity with the ongoing UCU strike. We are determined to keep the event free for all. However, we welcome your voluntary charitable donations which would go towards the rent of the Mary Ward House.

To the most ardent art lovers, we offer buying the symposium's poster, which was designed by the uniquely talented Ukrainian artist Hanna Strizh; or the postcard based on the same image and signed by Hanna.
For those of you who treasure Beardsley and ask for nothing in return, we yet have two charitable options.

With the sincerest gratitude for your enduring support,
Sasha
