Wheelchair Van for Cameron

$31,180 of $40,000 goal

Raised by 48 people in 13 months

This is my nephew, Cameron.  He was born with two rare genetic disorders called Angelman Syndrome and Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. If you're like we were, you may not be familiar with Angelman Syndome or Ehlers Danlos Syndrome.  Essentially Cameron's chromosome 15 is different from yours or mine.  Because of this, Cameron is non-verbal, has seizures, feeds through a tube into his belly, and must use a wheelchair.  He also has a huge crush on Shakira!  When he sees her video he grins and laughs.

Cameron just turned 17.  He is a little guy who is suddenly not so little anymore.  As he prepares to go into the adult system his requirements are more complicated than ever.  His equipment needs are astonomical... which is extremely expensive. We have started the HUGE initiative of fundraising for Cameron's next wheelchair van.  This van will go with Cameron into his adult years.  Our GoFundMe campaign is only one area of our fundraising efforts.  We recognize that this is a major endeavour and we are prepared to do whatever we can to ensure Cameron's needs are met.  Any donation large or small is greatly appreciated by Cameron and his family.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

(Message from my sister, Jennifer)

Hi everyone,
Sorry for the long wait for an update... It's taken a long time to finish up everything with the van. We have the van, and after some more modications with seats (thank you, friends at Service Star), we were able to use it on the weekend. On our first voyage, we went grocery shopping (very exciting, but Cam loved it), which is kind of ironic that the Superstore was the first place it went, since they donated $20,000 towards the cost.

We are very relieved to have this all finished up. There was a lot of work put in by many people. Thank you to everyone who supported our auction and chocolate bar sales. Louise, you worked tirelessly. Our family thanks you so much :) and Al for dragging home all those bottles and helping get donations.

Thank you to uncle Stephen for heading up the gofundme page. Thank you to Jeff Ashe for finding the other company... Saved a ton off our initial fundraising total with the better rate and trade-in. Thank you to Hampton High and the Jim Summerville Memorial softball group and to St. Alphonsus church for your donations.

Lastly, this is the 2nd time we had been able to access the PC Children's Charity in order to purchase a modified van. We are very grateful. However, this program has been discontinued (they're focusing their donations on other great programs that involve food and nutrition... to schools and non-profits). I understand why they're focusing their charity this way. That being said, there are no other big sources of funding for others in the province who need to purchase a wheelchair van. I'd like to encourage anyone who sees anyone fundraising for a wheelchair van to please support them. Those who need it are literally housebound without it. Your support is life-changing.

This will be the last message posted through the GoFundMe. Thank you so much to everyone who has helped make this a reality.
It's Finally Here!

Friends and family,

I wanted to share an exciting update.
We were able to find another conversion company who was able to offer a much better rate for Cameron’s new wheelchair van. In addition to this, they will do a trade-in of our current van at the time that we receive the new one. So, we are at our goal (much earlier than expected!) Therefore, we don’t need to collect any more auction items and we no longer need to collect through the GoFundMe page. (We do have a small handful of items for auction already collected, which we will list shortly, and will use the funds for winter tires for the van).

I am *very* relieved to share this update. We only had a few months to collect the rest of the funds in order to take advantage of the grant that Cam was awarded. We started fundraising over a year ago, so it has been a very long year.

There are SO many people and groups to thank for their help with this initiative. Those who bought chocolate… those who sold chocolate for us… those who collected auction items… Those who made donations. There were people that have never met us who made a donation- I can’t describe how much that generosity means to me. I am so grateful to those around us (friends, family and community), for supporting us in all the ways that you have and continue to do. Without a doubt, Cameron would not have the opportunities that he has without your continued support.

There are really very many people to thank, and I know I won’t remember everyone. I would like to give a special thank you to my brother Stephen who sold a TON of chocolate (yay! for his co-workers for needing a chocolate fix) and for setting up and managing the GoFundMe page. And I’d like to extend a very special thank you to someone who is also like family to us- Cameron’s caregiver, Louise. She has worked tirelessly to help us, on her own time. I could not have kept pushing through this on my own, and am so grateful.

Thank you!!

Jennifer & Cameron
