Wheelchair Van for Jason

Jason is a 10-year-old boy diagnosed with Duchenne’s Muscular Dystrophy.  He lives with his loving family of five.  His family has more than their share of emotional and physical struggles.  His is oldest sister, Lauren, is just finishing up her freshmen year at Monson High School.  His middle sister, Rachel, has been diagnosed with Autism.  His dad, Scott, has Multiple Sclerosis.  As a dad of three, his physical limitations impact his ability to fully assist Jason during daily activities.  And mom, Kim, cares for her family without a complaint.  She simply “does what needs to be done.”  With all their struggles, they live with very limited income.

In the last year, Jason has lost the ability to actively move his body.  He requires a person to move him.  His primary means of mobility is his power chair throughout school, his home and his community.  Without his power chair, he is totally dependent on others. 

Given limited income, Jason’s family cannot afford the vehicle necessary to transport him in his power chair.  Jason is only able to leave his home in his manual chair which makes it difficult to play with friends and access activities in the community.  Two people are required to move him in and out of the car and then out of his car. As a result, this is frequently not available.  Jason is then not able to go out.  As most 10 year olds are looking forward to summer vacation, Jason knows that without a wheelchair van, he may find himself stuck at home without access to community, family and friends.     

A wheelchair van is essential for Jason and his family to live their best life.
