Aspiring for Higher Education!

Hi Everyone,

My name is Valerie Brito. I am the first in my family to graduate from college. Getting into college and financing it has been one of the most challenging but gratifying accomplishments of my life. Unfortunately, my parents were not able to financially support my academic dreams. In high school, when I needed academic help, my parents could not afford to hire a tutor; when preparing to take standardized tests, my parents could not afford to pay for pricy test-preparation classes. And when I was accepted into college, my parents could not pay my tuition. But throughout all of this, I felt no disadvantage. I just did what was necessary and what I had watched my immigrant parents do their entire lives: I worked hard, found ways around obstacles, and ultimately found a way to reach my goal.

I am proud to say that with blood, sweat, tears, and a whole lot of coffee, I graduated from Duke University in 2015 with degrees in Biology and Chemistry. While I was at Duke, I was on the Dean's List, published my research in the medical review journal Pediatric Annals, was President of Duke Global Medical Brigades, and worked as a Clinical Research Assistant in the Pediatric Department. I am now pursuing a career as a healthcare provider. For me, becoming a healthcare provider is the most inspiring and rewarding career. As a pediatric healthcare provider, I will be able to realize my dream of making a difference in the lives of children.

I am so close to achieving my dreams, as I have been accepted into the USC Physician Assistant (PA) Master’s Program.  If I can secure funding, I will start in August 2017. If not, I will continue to apply for scholarships and seek unique ways to finance the next chapter in my educational journey. While an undergraduate student at Duke, I was able to financially support myself by cobbling together multiple scholarships. Graduate school is different - there are only a few competitive scholarships and my resources are limited. Because of their financial circumstances, my parents cannot co-sign a loan for me, so I am reaching out to you and asking for your support.

Becoming a PA is my dream but I cannot achieve it without being able to pay for tuition. I am asking for your help. Whether it be suggesting other resources like scholarships available for PA Graduates, scholarships available from a company you are familiar with, advice, or funding, I will be extremely grateful for any support.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!

Please feel free to contact me with any questions, comments, or to offer words of encouragement!
