Valerie's Campaign

I am Valerie's brother, Tony Mendoza.  Our dear Valerie has been hospitalized at Fairview Ridges in Burnsville, MN since Tuesday. She is fighting a tough battle against diabetes  involving a serious blood infection being supplied by infected bones in her right foot. Doctors have determined that her body is unable to fight off the infection on her own. Therefore, with great courage today, she is undergoing a below-the-knee amputation to remove the compromised bone.

Anyone who knows Valerie, knows that she is always there to listen and support those that she loves.  Now it’s our turn.  And if you know Valerie, you also know that she would be extremely reluctant to ask anyone for financial assistance.  However, we have talked about this with her and she has agreed to allow us to establish this site for her.  While she is recovering from this operation, Valerie of course will be unable to work .  While she does have health insurance that will cover much of the costs of surgery and her recovery, her plan requires a high deductible as well as a high out-of-pocket limit.  The costs of her care on top of her modest living expenses will be substantial and well beyond her means.

Going forward, Valerie's life is going to change dramatically.  Accommodations will need to be made to her living arrangement. She will need extensive physical therapy to learn how to walk with a prosthetic.  We don't know yet how long it will be before Valerie can return to work.  Valerie's focus is and must be recovery from surgery and adjustment to a new way of life.  To the extent we can help her keep the focus on her recovery and lessen her financial stress, the faster and stronger her recovery will be.
