As always, Sondheim already said it best. How does this apply to us? Let me briefly explain...
Michael Cambell and I (Gonzalo Valencia), are aspiring writers. Currently, we are working on multiple musical projects that we hope folks will find to be awesome. The most recent one is a completely original musical called "Goblins & Gates." Some of you that are here might have seen our first ever staged reading of it! If you did, THANK YOU SO MUCH YOU ARE AWESOME AND WE LOVE YOU! Also, if you were lucky enough to attend our sold out showings, you will recall that you saw it for the low low price of free o'clock. The best of pricecess. So, if you would like to retroactivively pay for having seen our show, please leave ANY amount you desire. $20, $10, $1, $100. It doesn't matter. Any amount is awesome. If you cannot afford to at the moment, no worries, we still love you and we'll get you next time. ;-)
However, the main reason for this GoFundMe is because of our first project before we started working on "Goblins & Gates." Years ago, when we first started working together as writing partners, we made the mistake of starting work on an adaptation. We were young, excited, and, ultimately, naive. As many of you might imagine, with any adaptation will come many legal fees. Younger versions of ourselves knew there would be some fees but we were not fully aware of the astounding level of fees that would be acrued. Oh to be young and naive...
Fees started piling up when we created our own LLCs to be properly protected, joined the Dramatist Guild to get appropriate representation, created collaboration agreements, filled out copyrights, and, the big one, started legal negotiations to finalize the rights on this adaptation. The fees continued to add up and, in reality, we haven't been able to finish paying our lawyers to finish negotations once and for all. At this rate, we will likely be surpassing 10K in money spent to pursue our dream of being professional writers. Definitely not something our wallets look forward to but if it's the price we have to pay to bring joy to others, we will find a way.
So, as always, Mr. Sondheim couldn't be more right. "Advancing art is easy, financing it is not."
Our goal is simple at its core; Michael and I want to become professional writers and give the world "more to see." With your help, I believe we can achieve our dreams and perhaps do it without getting into unbelievable debt.
We will pay you back in the present with links and clips of things we are working on throughout 2018. Stay tuned for updates and more info on our work! Whenever we aren't teaching high school kids about math and science, we will be working on stuff for the world to see. Regardless of whether or not you are able to contribute to our quest, we are proud and excited to have you be a part of our journey!
