Help George Get Back On His Feet

Donation protected
From his hometown of Cheyenne, Wyoming where George Jay Wienbarg’s well loved voice spoke to all of us over the radio at KRAE and KVWO, to his adopted home of thirty-eight years in New York City working in radio, television, theater and film, George’s presence in many lives has been one of love, support and infectious enthusiasm. He has built his life reaching out to people, always remembering his roots, while enriching so many from west to east with his positive outlook of “Anything’s possible”.

George’s life took an abrupt turn on the night of April 27th when he was walking home from a favorite restaurant. Just around the corner from his apartment a bunch of guys started harassing him. He turned the corner from Eighth Ave. to his apartment on W. 42nd St. and was jumped from behind and brutally beaten. When he regained consciousness, he was being loaded into an ambulance. From that moment his life, as he’d known it, drastically changed. Among other injuries (broken jaw, tooth & ribs) he was bleeding into his brain stem, causing a stroke and total paralysis.

After a week in ICU he was moved to rehabilitation where he spent two weeks working to miraculously regain his ability to balance and use a walker. He has gradually regained movement and is hopeful, but he currently has severe instability and paresthesia (numbness along with sensations of tingling or prickling, “pins-and needles” throughout his body).

In the meantime, George is unable to work on the tour boats which he’d been doing for the last four years in New York Harbor, the Hudson and East rivers of New York and is uncertain if he will be able to in the future. Rent, bills, and food requirements resumed when, with his walker, he was released from rehab on Monday, 20 May. His apartment, on the 3rd floor, entails negotiating 3 flights of stairs.

In George’s words, “I’m trying to play it a day at a time. I’m giving myself the 40 days that I will have on my Medicare OT/PT, and a home healthcare nurse. After that, if I’m not able to return to work, I will have a moving van packed and move back home. It is for this unknown time frame – these 40 days – that I’m asking for assistance to not only survive but also to pay the 20% remaining of medical bills. Should it be necessary, I will move back to my beloved Cheyenne, Wyoming, but I will update you along the way as I know the status of my situation.”

“Thank you everyone for your love, support and for making me aware of what is most important in this world and in this life. And that is helping others. Though my job, my lifestyle and abilities to support and provide for myself have been challenged, I believe that I can make it through.

With profound gratitude and love, I thank you!”
