Moving to Texas
Recently, my sister and her family moved from Oregon to Texas. Quite the trip, especially with four children in tow, one of which is only a year old. They set out, with a truck, travel trailer, and an RV. Not long into their trek, and tragedy struck. The RV caught fire.
The Fire
My brother-in-law was driving the RV, and in a spectacular moment of common sense, pulled over as soon as there was a problem, ordered their oldest son out, and proceeded to call 911. His quick actions and that of the local fire department resulted in there not being any injuries.
Good News/Bad News
Everyone made it out safe. That’s the good news.
The bad news, is that the RV caught fire again that night. What was a minor tragedy, and in the grand scheme of things, seemed fixable, turned into they lost everything, except each other.
After taking a moment to let all of that sink in, they reminded the kids that the most important thing in all of this, was that no one was hurt, that things could be replaced.
Insurance Failed
And then started making phone calls, to family, friends, and the insurance company. Only to find out that their insurance won’t pay. They had bought not just the RV version of auto insurance for the trip, but what is called Full Timers insurance. They were told that Full Timers insurance was for people who lived in an RV full time, and was like Home Owners insurance.
For anyone who has ever owned Home Owners or Renters insurance, the home being covered in case of fire is normally standard. Apparently this is not so for Full Timers insurance. They were informed that Full Timers insurance would have only covered someone else getting hurt on the property. Because no one was injured, there was nothing they could do to help.
How You Can Help!
They did make it to Texas safely. And while that may still be what is most important in all of this, and things are replaceable, they still have 4 children to care for, who now have lost all of their clothes, books, toys, and everything in the world that was precious to them outside of the family. Now they could use all of our help getting back on their feet. Know that they are forever grateful for any and all help given, and that every little bit helps, no matter how small.
