Adrian's Medical Expenses

Donation protected
On April 12th, my 20 year old son, Adrian Rodriguez, was involved in a life altering incident in Guatemala, where he was temporarily residing for a missionary trip. While playing basketball, he fell 6 feet off of the elevated basketball court. He was rushed to the ER, where they determined his knee was broken in 5 places, as well as having fractures in both his tibia and fibula. Adrian was rushed into emergency surgery, where a metal plate and screws were put into place. He came out of surgery with 36 staples across his leg. It took a week after surgery before he was able to be cleared to fly back home to the United States. According to the doctors in Guatemala, he would only need nerve damage repair once home, but unfortunately that was not the case.

His first visit with a nerve specialist in Houston did not go exactly as planned because the x-rays not only confirmed that he has nerve damage, but also raised other concerns. He was referred to meet with an orthopedic surgeon for a second opinion. The orthopedic discovered that the surgery in Guatemala was done completely wrong-- not only did it need to be reversed, but the doctors in Guatemala removed an important muscle in his leg that is responsible for foot flexing. He has no feeling in parts of his leg and has foot drop, meaning Adrian will never be able to walk the same again. He will have to get a prosthetic device worn in his shoe, as well as go through months of physical therapy in order to help him re-learn how to walk. Another discovery was that Adrian has 2 different types of staph infection, which caused osteomyelitis, also known as infection of the bone. He was very near to being sepsis, but thank God the doctor caught it in time. My son, Adrian, was then transferred to Memorial Hermann Hospital to be properly treated for the staph bacteria. There, he had 2 surgeries as treatment to clean out infected areas and insert antibiotic beads. Adrian was hospitalized for 9 days and had a Picc Line inserted into him. On May 14th, he was released home to continue antibiotics through the Picc Line for 6 more weeks. He will be receiving home health care visits weekly until the infection is cleared. Once cleared, he will undergo major knee surgery and then later on nerve repair.

Insurance is not covering all of my son's medical expenses. Anything you can provide to help will go a long way. All donations will go towards his medical costs. We appreciate all the support we have had and continue to get. We thank you from the very bottom of our hearts.
