Shore Lab Discovery Center is a non-profit 501 (C) (3)organization providing comprehensive educational programming.
The Science Ship™ is a schooner named the RV Morning Star Explorer. The ship’s mission is to improve science literacy through education programs that are fun and engaging, encourage collaborative research, exploration and showcase science as it happens through live broadcasts and environmental films.
The Science Ship™ is a mobile classroom that allows students the opportunity to learn about science first hand by sailing the seas as Blue Water Explorer-Scientists . Students will work alongside, educators, researchers, film makers and crew as they explore our world unlocking nature’s secrets and providing inspiration to a new generation.
The Science Ship™ crew consists of renowned educators, scientists, seamen, adventurers, students and filmmakers. We also have a crew of animated characters led by Stevie© and her brother Iz© that will introduce children to the fascinating world of science. Film crews will follow the expeditions and record the outcomes, showcase new places and new discoveries while telling the backstories behind the people and the science.
THE SCIENCE SHIP™ MISSION OBJECTIVES
The Science Ship™ is an informal opportunity to engage students in new learning strategies that provide rich educational experiences in science.
• Students will learn the art of sailing and exploration from renowned seaman and scientists.
• Scientific ideas and skills will help students apply what they learn to the real world.
• Students will see how film plays an important role in preserving the environment.
• Live video conferencing will share student experiences with their peers and audiences worldwide.
• Students of all backgrounds will acquire the skills necessary to take concrete steps towards realizing their education and career goals.
• They will become the next generation of community and world leaders.
• The next generation to pass on a better planet to their children and their children’s children.
Experiences like The Science Ship™ can be more impactful on student learning than following lesson plans from a book . Learning about science first hand by sailing the seas on a Tall Ship is an alternative way to learn about science. It incorporates complex and basic science concepts using natural environments. Students will learn how to use film as a means to record their discoveries, save wildlife, preserve the environment and influence attitudes. They will gain skills like questioning, explaining and making prediction which have a strong impact on understanding scientific concepts. Students will be able to converse about places and cultures, research, conservation and seamanship. The process will better prepare them for success and career choices in a society driven by innovation. Upon completion they will receive either a certificate of completion or college credit.
We are positioned as a quality learning experience with excellent materials, effective management and well-prepared instructors . Our program philosophy is based in STEAM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) and Next Generation Science Standards that follow universal designs for learning. Strengthening the understanding of science and technology is essential to the security and economic vitality of our Nation and to the realities of the 21st century global economic and educational environment .
