Chauncey Morehouse Tribute Concert

For the very first time since 1927, the music of The Jean Goldkette Orchestra will be filling the hall of The Capitol Theatre in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania.

(The Capitol Theatre today - 2015)

On May 4th, 1927, The Jean Goldkette Orchestra performed a special concert in the hometown of Chauncey Morehouse, who was the drummer for the popular jazz ensemble based out of Detroit, Michigan.  Chauncey lived in Chambersburg from the age of 3 up to when he graduated high school and left to play in dance bands in the early 1920's.  He always returned home to visit his family who lived in the city their entire lives.

Chauncey's music career extended well into the 1970's until he passed away in October of 1980.  He recorded and performed with legends like Bing Crosby, The Dorsey Brothers, Bix Beiderbecke, Frank Trumbauer, The Saturday Night Swing Club Orchestra, and was also a studio musician for NBC Radio.

This very special event is being planned for Wednesday evening, July 22nd, 2015.  This event will be a special one-night performance by The Graystone Monarchs, a 10-piece dance band that specializes in music from the 1920's and 30's.  The concert is in conjunction with the music tour of The Hot Jazz Alliance, a 6-piece jazz ensemble made-up of 4 musicians from Australia, and 2 from the U.S.A.  The group will add 4 musicians to their current line-up for this one-night only performance to pay tribute to The Jean Goldkette Orchestra and Chauncey Morehouse.  This will also be an all-ages family event, with admission being FREE for everyone, or, children admitted free with $5 for each adult.

(The Hot Jazz Alliance - 2014)

We want to fill the theatre with families from all over the U.S.A who would love to be a part of an event that's sure to be exciting in Chambersburg!

Here are some of the musicians who will be performing in The Graystone Monarchs for this concert:

Michael McQuaid (Australia) - Reeds
Jason Downes (Australia) - Reeds
Jay Rattman (USA) - Reeds

Mike Davis (USA) - Trumpet
Andy Schumm (USA) - Cornet
David Sager (USA) - Trombone
Tom Roberts (USA) - Piano
John Scurry (Australia) - Banjo/Guitar
Leigh Barker (Australia) - String Bass
Josh Duffee (USA) - Drums

The Graystone Monarchs will perform music that was heard in The Capitol Theatre in 1927 by the Goldkette Orchestra, as well as other music being played by Chauncey Morehouse during his music career.  It will truly be a night to remember, and a very moving way to honor all these wonderful musicians.

(Josh Duffee - leader of The Graystone Monarchs)

This event will be memorable in the music sense as well as the historical value.  The band will fill the hall with the same hot jazz and dance music that was being heard all those years ago, but they'll also include historical photographs, home movies and other historical information pertaining to Chambersburg, The Capitol Theatre, and life itself in the 1920's.

On a special note, there will be members of Chauncey Morehouse's family attending this concert from New York, Florida, and all other parts of the country.  This will be their first time being in their families hometown, and seeing where their family lived for so many years.

We'll also have a sound engineer recording the entire evening, with the hopes of releasing a special cd featuring music from the concert.

The money being raised for this event will cover the costs for the band, renting the theatre, sound and lighting crew, a souvenir program, and the advertising.  Our hopes are to make this event FREE for everyone if we can raise the total amount in this campaign!

Your name will be listed as a sponsor in our souvenir program, but the dollar amount will not be listed.

We thank you for taking time to read this information about this exciting event in Chambersburg.  We hope you'd consider helping us fund this event so everyone attending the show can honor and pay tribute to one of Chambersburg's own, Chauncey Morehouse.

As of today, we are only $300 shy of reaching our goal for this show! If you know anyone who can help push us to the finish line, send them to this page to make a donation. I have received private donations that bring our $2,500 on here up to $3,700. So, this is the final push to make the goal!!

For those of you who are attending the Chauncey Morehouse Tribute Concert in Chambersburg on July 22nd, great news for hotel reservations. The Quality Inn and Suites have offered their hotel to anyone needing a room for the night. The original price is normally $110 per night, but they have a special rate of $60 plus tax for this special concert.

You have to call them directly to get the discount, and, you need to mention you are with the MOREHOUSE GROUP to receive the discount. Their number is 717-263-3400. The Graystone Monarchs will be staying at this hotel, as will the Morehouse Family members, so it will definitely be the place to be following the show!

GREAT NEWS! We have officially raised $3,500 of the needed $4,000. All we have left to raise these last couple of weeks is $500. Once we get that final amount, it is fully-funded!

I cannot thank you all enough for making this happen! We received a very nice donation from Jean Goldkette's relatives, Alann and Mali Krivor, this past weekend in Olympia.

This will probably be one of the last times you hear me saying this, but if you know ANYONE who would like to help towards the final $500, share this information with them. We've come so far with this project that it would be wonderful to see it fully-funded in the end.

All for Chauncey Morehouse and the city of Chambersburg!!

We are now only $1,700 away on the site here, but the great news is that we are even closer with private donations that have come in to me at home.

If we reach this goal on the page, we'll have the extra donations and gifts to use towards extra expenses for the band for the night. The interest and excitement has grown since this campaign started for this event, and I can only see it growing more up to the day of the actual show!

I'm working out our schedule now, but hopefully I will be doing a walking tour of the downtown with the Morehouse Family members when we are in town. We will also be visiting Cedar Grove Cemetary to pay respect to the Morehouse relatives who are buried there.

Again, I cannot thank everyone enough for all the support and encouragement with this show! We will definitely make history in Chambersburg on July 22nd, and honor a great man and musician as well, Chauncey Morehouse!

We can still use your donations on here for this event, so please share this and show everyone how far we've come in a short amount of time!

Here's the update since we are 1 month from the big show!

There was a wonderful write-up on the JAZZ LIVES blog from Michael Steinmann that I would recommend checking out...

We are at $1,250 now on here, but the money that has been raised so far is now at $2,500. We are only $1,500 from our goal!

Here is some more great news to hopefully raise some more money so we meet our goal...

The Capitol Theatre in Chambersburg will make this event FREE to everyone who would like to attend!! They want to have a packed house for this special performance, and they wanted me to share this information on the page.

This event will definitely happen, but we need the money to help pay the musicians and take care of all the other costs that are happening with this special event.

If you have already contributed and have contributed again towards the show, THANK YOU!! If you know anyone who would be interested in helping us reach our goal and have their name tied to this amazing event, please share this information with them. I've heard nothing but 100% positive comments about this show from everyone!

That was a GREAT show! No way it should have been free! I offer this in lieu of having bought a ticket.
