UWO Rowing World Record for Mental Health

Donation protected
We are the University of Western Ontario First Year Men’s Rowing team, and from January 27th to January 30th we will be attempting to break the WORLD RECORD for ONE MILLION METERS on a rowing machine for a group of 10 aged 19 or under. The current world record is 65 hours, 35 minutes, 19.3 seconds of around-the-clock rowing, we believe that we can come in well under 65 hours.  To complete this record, we will spend three days living in our school's erg room.

Along with going for the world record, we will be raising funds to be split evenly between two initiatives: Half of the funds raised will be given to the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), and half of the funds will be used to send nine members of our first-year team to the Jefferson Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia to race in the Frosh 8+ event.

First, the portion of proceeds going to the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) will help local, national, and global research on mental illness.  The World Health Organization estimates that 1 in every 4 people have suffered from mental illness. CAMH’s website states that “By the time Canadians reach 40 years of age, 1 in 2 have—or have had—a mental illness.” In order to reduce these numbers, there needs to be more research on what prevents and cures mental illnesses. The portion of funds directed to this cause will be used by CAMH to support people struggling with mental health issues, as well as conduct research to further our understanding of mental illness and personal care.

Second, the first-year men have been working hard to prove ourselves to our coaches, our teammates, our competition, and ourselves. We have set our sights on racing the Jefferson Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia, and are eager to make a name for ourselves on an international level. Unfortunately, since the spring is not considered a racing season in Canadian University Rowing, the team will receive no funding from the school for this regatta. Due to the rising costs of international travel and our extremely limited student income, we may not get the chance to race in this event. The portion of funds directed to this initiative will help to cover the athletes' entry fees, trailer fees, accommodations, uniform, etc.

These are two initiatives that our team feels very strongly about, and will keep them in mind as we struggle to push to the million-meter mark.

Due to security restrictions on the Western Rowing Team's Student Executive bank account, funds will be withdrawn to the account of the campaign organizer (Jeremy Langelaan), and cheques will be written to CAMH and the Western Rowing Team, each for 50% of the funds raised. The UWO Rowing Vice President Finance (Patrick Gogan) will oversee the withdrawal process.
