What is Harvard World Model United Nations?

In general, Model United Nations, also known as Model UN or MUN, is an extra-curricular activity in which students typically roleplay delegates to different countries of the United Nations and simulate UN committees.

Harvard World Model United Nations (WorldMUN) is the most internationally diverse college-level Model UN conference organized by the Harvard University’s staff. Every year 2,000+ university students from over 115 countries attend to WorldMUN which takes place in a different location around the world.

Harvard WorldMUN in the USB is a student organization composed by individuals with interest in debate, leadership, diplomacy and current events with a will to change the world. Minding Harvard’s principles for WorldMUN, we aim for an integral professional preparation so we can be capable of complementing the limitations that our respective careers might have.

WorldMUN USB focuses on forming students with problem solving abilities, capable of teamwork, negotiation and spreading new ideas that work as solutions to the most pressing problems of our generation. Being more than an academic team, we are a school of leadership. Excellence has become our tradition, and that tradition in our legacy for a better Venezuela.

Our goal this year is, not only to represent our university and country at the 26th edition of WorldMUN (which will take place in Montréal, Canada), but keep hitting our strikes as the Best Large Delegation; which is the greatest award granted to the delegation whose diplomatic skills excel over any other. Nevertheless, the ongoing economic crisis in Venezuela and the fast-growing inflation has taken a part in this process as our main concern. Besides the monetary devaluation, Venezuela has an exchange rate of 1USD for 400BsF; the tricky side to this is that due to many restrictions, USDs at 400BsF are just for importing medicines and food, forcing us to turn to the black market prices, which –currently- stays at 1,200BsF per USD. In Venezuela, something so simple as a $3USD burger can cost up to $170USD. Thus, imagine plane tickets for a group of 24 students. It is with remarkably hard work that we are able to collect the money we need to achieve our goal, being it through looking for sponsors, making fund-raising activities and donations.

Donations certainly help this family cope with all the expenses that this incredible experience requires since even one cent could make the difference to bring this group of 24 students closer to the conference. Harvard WorldMUN is an opportunity for us, students, to develop our abilities and become better professionals, to reach outstanding personal growth and to become the change that we want to see in the world.

Each member has the opportunity to receive a ten months long preparation in order to be ready to represent Universidad Simon Bolivar and show the potential Venezuela has to offer at the Harvard World Model of United Nations. It is through lively and informed debate, substantive excellence and a social and cultural connection that the WorldMUN experience lets us inspire cooperation, professionalism, excellence and, most importantly, friendship.
